The JAY J2 Deep Contour cushion is a foam and fluid wheelchair cushion from Sunrise Medical, built for deeper immersion and more stability than the standard J2.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Three parts: a pre-contoured closed-cell foam base with a 3 in (76 mm) well, a JAY Flow fluid tripad with increased fluid volume, and an outer cover.
- Immersion: the fluid pad sits under the pelvis and is held to the base with hook and loop strips; there is nothing to inflate.
- Covers: stretch (standard) for the most immersion, AirExchange for airflow, or moisture-resistant for incontinence.
- Height and weight: 4.5 in (114 mm) high; 6.27 lbs (2.84 kg) at 16 x 16 in.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Deeper immersion: for a person whose therapist wants more immersion and stability than the standard J2, which is 2.5 in high.
- Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist decides whether it suits and sets the size.
Will it fit?
- Sized to the person: the width matches the hip width when seated, and the depth stops 1 to 2 in (25 to 51 mm) short of the back of the knees.
- Sizes: 18 standard sizes from 14x14 to 24x18 in; 20 in depths are included on the 16, 18 and 20 in widths.
- Finished size: about 1/4 in under nominal with the cover on; at 4.5 in high it raises the seat, so check the footrests. Other sizes and positioning pieces are made through JAY Your Way.
Using it day to day
- Placement: fluid pad and material tags toward the rear, seat bones centred on the pad in the well, hook and loop engaged, and the footrests set.
- Monthly check: sit without the cover for two minutes, transfer off and press where the seat bones were; at least 0.5 in (13 mm) of fluid should sit before the base, or stop and see the clinician.
- Skin and stability: check the skin daily for redness, and assess the anti-tip set-up because a cushion can change the wheelchair's centre of gravity.
- Care: wash the cover inside out at 60 C (140 F), drip or tumble dry low, with no ironing, dry cleaning or chlorine bleach; wipe the fluid pad and foam, never submerge either.
- Latex and warranty: no natural rubber latex; 24 months on the cushion and 6 months on the removable cover.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Sling seats: replace stretched upholstery, or add a JAY solid seat insert, or order the solid drop seat version.
- Custom builds: positioning pieces are quoted and non-returnable; read the return policy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the J2 and the J2 Deep Contour?
The Deep Contour is 4.5 in high against the standard J2's 2.5 in, with a deeper well and more fluid; your therapist decides which the assessment calls for.
How do I measure for it?
Measure the hip width when seated and the depth to 1 to 2 in short of the back of the knees. Do not use the wheelchair's seat width as the guide.
Can I leave it in the car in winter?
No. Do not leave it below 5 C (40 F) or above 42 C (108 F), and let it reach room temperature before use.

Warranty details
Sunrise Medical warrants the JAY J2 Deep Contour cushion to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for 24 months from the date of purchase, under normal use.
- Cushion: 24 months. Sunrise Medical repairs or replaces it at its option, without charge.
- Removable cover: 6 months.
- Excludes punctures, tears and burns.
- JAY Flow fluid pad: replaced free during the warranty when a clinician or authorized dealer finds the fluid volume wrong for the original purchaser.
- Claims and repairs go through the nearest authorized Sunrise Medical dealer.
