The JAY Soft Combi P is a lightweight foam wheelchair cushion from Sunrise Medical, with a pre-contoured coated foam base and a moisture-resistant cover.

What does it do and how does it work?

• Base: pre-contoured high-resiliency foam, 3 in (76 mm) high, sealed with a blue coating that protects the foam and wipes clean.
• P build: a deeper leg trough with medial thigh and trochanteric support, the maker's description of what the P adds to the plain Soft Combi.
• Cover: a moisture-resistant cover with a non-slip bottom.
• No air or fluid: nothing to inflate; 2.8 lbs (1.3 kg) at 16 x 16 in.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

• Low risk: Sunrise describes it for the client at low risk of skin breakdown who requires mild to moderate postural support, and rates it for comfort and basic positioning.
• A different class: where the assessment calls for a skin protection cushion, a different JAY model is needed.
• Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist chooses the cushion and the size.

Will it fit?

• Widths: 14 to 24 in (356 to 610 mm).
• Depths: 14 to 18 in (356 to 457 mm) in the maker's printed range; the order form also lists 20 and 22 in depths on the 22 and 24 in widths.
• Set pairs: sizes are set width and depth pairs, not every combination; the rest are made through JAY Your Way.
• Measuring: measure the seat width and depth, then order the nearest matching size; confirmed before the order goes to Sunrise.
• Custom: other sizes and modifications are available through Sunrise's JAY Your Way programme.

Using it day to day

• Placement: the cover faces up, the non-slip bottom holds it on the seat, and nothing sits between the person and the cushion.
• Monthly check: inspect the cover for tears and wear and the foam for consistency.
• Cover care: remove and zip the cover, machine wash warm, drip or tumble dry low; no dry cleaning, industrial washers, bleach or steam autoclave.
• Foam care: wipe the coated base with a damp cloth and no soap, never submerge it, and let it air dry fully before the cover goes back on.
