Description

The Handicare ReTurn is a manual sit-to-stand and transfer aid with a base plate and rising ladder, in 7400, 7500i and 7600 models.

What does it do and how does it work?

It lets a person rise, pivot and sit again without a sling.

  • Two large lockable center wheels carry most of the weight; four corner castors steer in tight spaces.
  • The rising ladder leans away, is open at the bottom and has several grips, including a central power grip.
  • The lower-leg supports adjust up and down, sideways and in angle; the 7500i has a hook opening for the ReTurnBelt.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

The user must support their weight standing, stand and keep balance with support, grasp the handles and understand instructions.

  • The 7400 suits children and shorter adults, the 7500i most adults and the 7600 larger users.
  • A person who cannot bear weight needs a powered lift and sling instead.

Will it fit?

The 7400 and 7500i base is 27 x 22.4 in (685 x 570 mm) and 1.6 in (40 mm) high; the 7600 is 31.3 x 26.5 in (795 x 672 mm) and 1.8 in (45 mm).

  • The 7400 and 7500i hold 330 lb (150 kg); the 7600 holds 450 lb (205 kg).
  • The low base slides under a bed, chair or wheelchair; check the gap under it.

Using it day to day

Roll the ReTurn to the bed, chair or toilet, brake the wheels and place the feet on the marked positions.

  • The user grasps the ladder, leans forward and stands; the caregiver applies counter pressure throughout.
  • Set the lower-leg support about 3 cm (two fingers) below the kneecaps.
  • Keep the weight between the wheels; weight outside the support surface raises the tipping risk.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

It is for shorter transfers on a flat floor, not for long moves.

  • The ReTurnBelt is a separate accessory, sizes 6031 to 6036; the 7500i has the opening to hook it.
  • Do not use the 7400 for a normal-height user who cannot keep balance.
  • Clean with warm water or soap; disinfect with 70 percent ethanol or 45 percent isopropanol; expected life up to 10 years.

How does it compare?

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used on carpet?

No. It is for a flat floor, so carpet, thresholds and uneven surfaces are out.

Is the ReTurnBelt included?

No. The belt is a separate accessory, and the 7500i has the opening to hook it.

Does it lift someone from the floor?

No. It is for short transfers between seats; a floor pickup needs a floor lift and sling.

Funding help for a patient lift in Ontario

March of Dimes Canada's Home and Vehicle Modification Program may consider floor patient lifts for eligible Ontario residents; it is income-tested, needs an occupational therapist's assessment and must approve the purchase first.

WSIB may consider a lift for a worker whose workplace injury requires one, and Veterans Affairs Canada may cover transfer and lift devices for eligible Veterans with a prescription.

A private health plan may pay part of the cost, and we prepare the quote these programs ask for. See March of Dimes funding and our funding guide, or call (905) 798-1853.
