Description
The Drive Viper Plus GT is an aluminum folding wheelchair with 24 in (61 cm) hand-rim wheels for self-propelling or a companion push.
What does it do, and how does it work?
- Universal arms: a push button slides the pad to desk, half or full length, and each sets at eight heights 1/2 in (13 mm) apart; they flip back.
- Seat depth extends from 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm) on the 16, 18 and 20 in chairs; the 22 in chair is 18 in deep.
- A dual axle sets the seat 17.5 to 19.5 in (44 to 50 cm) from the floor; the Super Hemi Kit lowers it another 2 in (5 cm).
- The back adjusts to 17, 18 or 19 in (43, 46 or 48 cm) high and 5 to 20 degrees in 5 degree steps.
- 24 in composite mag wheels with hand rims, solid tires and quick-release axles; anti-tippers are standard with flip-up wheels.
- 34.5 to 36 lbs (15.6 to 16.3 kg) without the front riggings.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Adults up to 300 lbs (136 kg) on 16 to 20 in seats, or 350 lbs (159 kg) on the 22 in seat.
- Wants one steel size with a fold-down back: the Drive Rebel.
- Needs tilt: tilt-in-space wheelchairs. Over 350 lbs: the Sentra heavy duty.
Will it fit?
- Seat 16, 18, 20 or 22 in (41, 46, 51 or 56 cm) wide, measured end to end across the upholstery.
- Seat height 17.5 to 19.5 in (44 to 50 cm); the Super Hemi Kit lowers it 2 in (5 cm).
- Open: 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm) wide by 46 in (117 cm) long; folded: 33 x 12.25 x 36 in (84 x 31 x 91 cm).
- Measure hip width, hip to knee and knee to heel in shoes, or book a free home assessment.
Using it day to day
- Set both push-to-lock wheel locks before a transfer, a forward lean, or an elevator or lift.
- Fold by lifting the footplates and the seat; the arms, front riggings and rear wheels release.
- Set the footrest length with the rider seated and keep the lowest point at least 2.5 in (6.4 cm) off the floor.
- The seat depth is factory-set shortest; move the extension post to the second hole to lengthen it.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- The chair is not a seat in a motor vehicle and is not for roadways; get help on inclines.
- Do not stand on the footrests or the chair, and never use the wheel locks to slow down.
- No cushion is included; add one in the seat width.
- Elevating legrests must be Drive's ALELR pair; the LK3JELR pair sold for other Drive chairs does not fit.
How does it compare?
- The Cruiser X4 uses a triple axle, takes 300 lbs and does not include anti-tippers.
- The Drive Rebel is steel, comes in one 18 in size and has a fold-down back.
Frequently asked questions
Does the back recline?
No; it sets from 5 to 20 degrees at set-up. The Viper Plus Reclining is a different chair.
What maintenance does it need?
Solid tires need little care; wash the upholstery with mild soap and check the wheels for play.

Drive Medical warrants the Viper Plus GT wheelchair to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the original consumer purchaser.
- Frame and durable parts: limited lifetime, original purchaser only.
- Not covered: non-durable parts that wear and need periodic replacement, such as rubber accessories, casters and grips.
- Excludes failure from misuse, negligence or normal wear and tear.
