Description
The Ki Mobility Ethos is a rigid aluminum manual wheelchair for an adult who self-propels over rough pavement.
What does it do and how does it work?
Four polymer towers hold the seat frame above a separate base, so less road shake reaches the seat.
- Spare polymers in other densities come with the chair.
- Camber plugs set the rear wheels at 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 degrees.
- Lift the release bar to fold the back down, then latch it before anyone sits.
- One hex key sets the back in 3-degree steps, or adds 4 or 9 degrees of relax.
- Without rear wheels, a 16" x 16" frame with a fixed back, 4" casters and a tubular footplate is 11.6 lbs (5.26 kg).
- Use both anti-tips. Stay off slopes over 9 degrees.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Adults to 275 lbs (124.7 kg), rider and items carried, who push their own wheels.
- Choose a folding wheelchair when the frame must fold side to side.
- For a one-piece rigid frame, see the Rogue 2. Over 275 lbs (124.7 kg), see bariatric wheelchairs.
- If the seat must tilt with you, see tilt-in-space wheelchairs.
Will it fit?
- Seat width 12-20" (30-51 cm), depth 14-20" (36-51 cm), front height 13.5-20.5" (34-52 cm), rear height 13.5-20" (34-51 cm).
- Back posts are fixed or height adjustable. Arms are height-adjustable T-arms or swing-away arms. The chair Ki Mobility tested was 26.8" (680 mm) wide.
- We confirm seat width, depth and front seat height before you order. A free home assessment measures hips, hip to knee, and knee to heel.
Using it day to day
- Fold the back and pull the axles. Do not lift by the release bar, or by removable parts while someone is sitting in it.
- The chair Ki Mobility tested was 33 lbs (15 kg). That is the whole chair, not the 11.6 lbs (5.26 kg) frame.
- Wheel locks push or pull to lock. Dry it after rain, and keep it out of sand.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- The cushion and back support are separate. The limit is 275 lbs (124.7 kg). The frame does not fold side to side.
- In a vehicle it is a seat only with the transit option, facing forward. Otherwise transfer to a vehicle seat.
- Frame, polymers and quick-release axles: life of the original purchaser. Other Ki parts: 1 year. See the Warranty tab.
How does it compare?
- The Rogue 2 is a one-piece frame at 10.6 lbs (4.8 kg) with the rear wheels off, against 11.6 lbs (5.26 kg) for the Ethos.
- The Helio A6 folds side to side and is rated to 265 lbs (120 kg), or 350 lbs (159 kg) with its heavy-duty kit.
- See rigid wheelchairs and Type 4 wheelchairs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make the ride firmer later?
Yes. Spare polymers come with the chair. Push the new set into the four towers.
Does opening the back tilt the seat?
No. Only the back moves, in 3-degree steps, plus 4 or 9 degrees of relax.
Can it be a seat in a van?
Only with the transit option, facing forward. Otherwise transfer to a vehicle seat.
