We’ve been using this mattress for my mother, and it’s been excellent. The Domus 4 Mattress is comfortable and easy to use. The controls are straightforward, but I wish the pump came with a quieter mode for nighttime use.
Description
The Domus 4 is a powered alternating pressure and micro low air loss mattress replacement from Wellell, distributed in Canada by Permobil. It measures 35.5 by 79 by 8 in and is rated 450 lbs.
What does it do and how does it work?
- The pump alternates the cells on a 10-minute cycle, shifting pressure as the bladders inflate and deflate.
- A constant low pressure (static) mode holds the surface steady, and max inflate firms it for care tasks.
- Seat inflation supports the person in a Fowler position.
- The cell-on-cell bladder at the sacrum keeps a lower air layer to avoid bottoming out.
- Visual and audible alarms warn of a fault; settings lock after five minutes.
- A CPR release valve lets a caregiver deflate the surface quickly.
Who is it for?
- Permobil describes it for clients at medium to high risk of pressure injuries, with low air loss for microclimate control.
- A nurse, doctor or therapist should decide whether it matches the person's assessment.
- It supports a care plan; it does not replace repositioning.
Will it fit the bed?
- 35.5 in wide, 79 in long and 8 in high (90 by 201 by 20 cm).
- A gap filler extends the surface to 84 in for longer decks.
- 450 lbs is the mattress rating; the bed frame and rails carry their own limits, and the lowest applies.
- This standard model has no foam transfer edges. Add-on bolsters with R5 covers and 6 in firm transfer edges convert it to a 48 in Domus Edge; the separate Domus 4 Edge is that raised-edge build.
- Check the rail gaps. Health Canada recommends under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends. See bed rails.
- A used mattress cannot be returned. Measure first and read the return policy.
What happens in a power cut?
- Alternation and low air loss stop without power; the cell-on-cell layer may keep some passive support.
- The CPR valve empties the surface quickly when needed.
- Learn the alarm and outage response first, and follow the care team's written plan.
How is it cleaned?
- The quilted top cover zips off in one step for cleaning or replacement.
- Follow the facility's cover and cell protocol; inspect seams and tubing at each linen change.
- Confirm the cover package that arrives; the Canadian and North American descriptions differ.
How does it compare?
- Domus 4 Edge: the same therapy with raised foam transfer edges.
- Med-Aire 14027: a simpler powered replacement, rated 350 lbs.
- Serene Air: another powered low air loss surface with different widths.
Frequently asked questions
Is Domus 4 an overlay?
No. It is an eight-inch mattress replacement. Remove the old mattress and fit the Domus 4 to the deck.
Which part number applies in Canada?
The Canadian complete system is listed as DOM436 and the North American code is PD02501. Tell us the bed and we confirm the code that will ship.
Does it have raised edges?
The standard Domus 4 is an air-cell surface. Raised foam transfer edges come with the Domus 4 Edge or with the add-on bolster kit.
