Description
The Prism Super Back for Kids is the paediatric wheelchair back in Future Mobility Healthcare's Prism series; the Mississauga maker also calls it the Super Kids back. It is a 5052 aluminium shell under three layers of foam, with a lumbar pad and a contour pad as standard.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Foam: polyurethane, high-density and memory foam over a contoured base, with a lumbar pad and a contour pad; the foam can be replaced.
- Shell: 5052 aluminium, with contoured sides built into the back rather than add-on lateral pads.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Children: for a child up to 150 lbs (68 kg) with round back posts and a seat 10 to 16 in wide, who needs a firm, shaped back instead of upholstery.
- Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist chooses the size and settings; changing the depth or angle changes the chair's centre of gravity and stability.
Will it fit?
- Sizes: 18 sizes from 10x12 to 16x16 in; width follows the seat width, height the child's seated measurement.
- Custom: made to order from 10 to 16 in wide and 12 in or more high.
- Stock labels: four sizes are listed as stock and fourteen as non-stock; the labels do not guarantee current availability or a dispatch date.
Using it day to day
- Mounting and removal: two cane clamps grip the back posts, with mounting plates on the clamps; the back hangs in the top slots and latches at the bottom. Push the release lever down on the left plate, then the right, and the lower pins eject so the back lifts out.
- Adjustment: height along the posts; depth over a 5 in (127 mm) range; angle from 15 degrees forward to 20 degrees back, set with the child seated. A recessed position can reduce rearward stability, so reassess after a change.
- Headrest: the shell top has three sets of holes for a headrest adaptor bracket; a compatible headrest needs a separate mount, confirmed by the clinician.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Covers: 4-way stretch, or infection control in Recovery 5 fabric; keep the cover intact.
- Care: wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, no softener or bleach, and air dry it out of direct sun; wipe the shell.
- Wider frames: the back fits a frame up to 2 in (51 mm) wider with longer pins, bought separately, after a fitting and stability check.
- Custom builds: made to order and non-returnable; read the return policy.
- Warranty: 3 years on the back, 1 year on hardware and 90 days on the cover, for the original purchaser.

Future Mobility Healthcare warrants the Prism Super Back for Kids to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use by the original purchaser.
- Back: 3 years.
- Hardware: 1 year.
- Cover: 90 days.
- Covers the original purchaser only. Defective parts are repaired or replaced at Future Mobility's discretion; labour and shipping are not included.
- Excludes normal wear, not following the instructions, negligence, accident, improper use, maintenance or storage, and unauthorized parts, modifications or repairs.
- Claims go through the dealer that sold the back.
