Description
The Prism Orion Back is Future Mobility's rigid, foam-padded wheelchair back for mild to moderate postural support, with a 5052 aluminium shell and replaceable foam.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Shell: a lightweight 5052 grade aluminium shell with a replaceable foam pad under an attractive cover.
- Adjustment: height, depth and angle of recline, with a full 5 in (127 mm) range of forward and rear travel.
- Hardware: adjustable angle hardware with a silver flip latch for quick removal and three Allen-key screws for height.
- Mounting: the hardware fits 3/4, 7/8 and 1 in tubing; ask us to confirm the supplied kit for 3/4 in posts.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Mild support: for a seating plan that calls for a shaped rigid back with positional adjustment, and ease of attachment.
- Orion chairs and others: the maker supplies it on Orion wheelchairs and as a separate back; a separate back still needs its own fit and hardware check.
- Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist selects the back and size.
Will it fit?
- Sizes: OB1414, OB1616, OB1618, OB1620, OB1716, OB1720, OB1816, OB1818, OB1820, OB1916, OB1920, OB2016, OB2018 and OB2020 (width x height in inches).
- Stock: the 16x16, 16x20, 18x16, 18x20, 20x16 and 20x20 are listed as stock; the others are non-stock and the 20x18 is on the newer order form.
- Measuring: the fitter measures the back posts and the support height; not every width has every height.
- Capacity: 250 lbs (113 kg).
- Weight: 4.75 lbs (2.15 kg) at 18 x 16 in.
Using it day to day
- Mounting: the clamp bolts to each back post and the back hooks into the hardware; the silver flip latch releases it.
- Adjustment: set the height with the three screws, then depth and angle with the user seated; moving the back changes the chair's balance, so reassess the anti-tips.
- Care: machine wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, no bleach or softener, and air dry it; the back is used only with its cover in place.
- Warranty: 3 years on the back, 1 year on hardware and 90 days on the cover.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?

- Custom builds: made to order and non-returnable; read the return policy.
- Foam: the foam pad can be replaced on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Is it only for an Orion wheelchair?
No. Future Mobility supplies it on Orion wheelchairs and as a separate back, which still needs its own fit and hardware check.
Does a 20 x 18 in Orion Back exist?
Yes. The newer Rev1.2 order form lists OB2018; an older brochure omits it.
Which back posts fit?
The Prism manual establishes 1 in (25 mm) posts and 7/8 in (22 mm) with inserts; the maker lists 3/4 in as well, so confirm that size with us.
Can the cover be replaced?
Yes. A replacement cover is ordered separately, and the foam pad can also be replaced on its own.
