Description
The JAY Zip is a pediatric wheelchair back from Sunrise Medical. It replaces the chair's sling upholstery with a contoured shell and foam.
What does it do and how does it work?
It gives posterior and mild lateral thoracic support, with 1 to 2.5 in (2.5 to 6.4 cm) of lateral contour that varies by width.
- A 12 by 12 in (30.5 by 30.5 cm) back weighs 2.5 lb (1.1 kg) with its hardware.
- Quick release hardware has two mounting points, 2.75 in (7 cm) of depth, 1 in (2.54 cm) of width adjustment and 20 degrees of angle.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
It suits a child from 25 to 165 lb (11.3 to 75 kg), about 2 to 15 years old, who needs more trunk support than a sling back gives.
- A child outside that weight range needs a different back.
Will it fit?
Measure the chair's back canes outside to outside before you choose.
- An 8 in back fits 7.7 to 9.3 in (19.6 to 23.6 cm); a 10 in back fits 9.7 to 11.3 in (24.6 to 28.7 cm).
- A 12 in back fits 11.7 to 14.3 in (29.7 to 36.3 cm); a 14 in back fits 13.7 to 16.3 in (34.9 to 41.3 cm).
- The canes must be 3/4 to 1 1/8 in (1.9 to 2.85 cm) across.
Using it day to day
The back lifts off its receivers for cleaning or transport.
- Pull the handle down, rotate the back up and lift it out; refit with the cord until it clicks.
- Machine wash the outer cover at 50 C (122 F), then drip or tumble dry on low. Do not dry clean, bleach or steam autoclave it.
- Wipe the shell and inner cover with soap and water.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
It fits most manual chairs, but not a chair whose back angle passes 60 degrees from vertical.
- Do not fit it to a chair that reclines or tilts past 60 degrees: the back can disconnect.
- For vehicle travel, keep the shell top within 3 in (7.6 cm) of the child's shoulder.
- Spine Align inserts, lateral pads, chest straps and Whitmyer head supports are options.
Which version should I choose?
Choose the width, height and cover when you order.
- Widths are 8, 10, 12 and 14 in (20.3, 25.4, 30.5 and 35.6 cm); heights are 6, 8, 10 and 12 in (15.2, 20.3, 25.4 and 30.5 cm).
- The outer cover is machine-washable silver X-static stretch fabric.
How does it compare?
The backrest range covers adult backs; the Zip is sized for children. The cushions complete the seat. The positioning support range adds laterals, chest straps and headrests.
Frequently asked questions
Can the back be used in a vehicle?
Yes, with the shell top within 3 in (7.6 cm) of the child's shoulder. It is not a restraint: use the chair's tiedown and belt.
We have a tilt chair. Can we use it?
Only if the chair's back stays within 60 degrees of vertical. Past that it can disconnect, so we check the chair first.
Can the cover be replaced?
It unzips and machine washes. The 24 month warranty does not cover the removable cover.
