Handicare polyester hygiene sling with clips, M921529

The Handicare hygiene sling with clips (M921529) is a polyester toileting sling, padded, with an open seat, built-in head support and universal clips for a clip spreader bar.

What does it do and how does it work?

The open seat gives a carer access for toileting during the transfer, and the clips hook onto the lift bar.

• Adjustable head support and an under-arm padded roll support the upper body.
• A waist band closes with a clunk-click buckle, and a modesty strap runs between the legs.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

It suits a person with good upper body tone and head control who needs hygiene access during a transfer.

• It is a toileting sling, not a full body sling; choose a full body sling if the person cannot hold the head or trunk.
• A full risk assessment decides whether the sling and the transfer are suitable.

Will it fit?

Size follows the waist and hip measurement, with a minimum back measurement.

• XS fits 77 to 87 cm (30.25 to 34.25 in); then 87 to 107, 97 to 117, 112 to 132 and 125 to 145 cm; XXL is 138 to 158 cm (54.25 to 62.25 in).
• The minimum back measurement rises from 22 cm (8.75 in) on XS to 34 cm (13.5 in) on XXL.
• An oversized sling can let the person slip through the seat opening, so measure first.

Using it day to day

Open the head support and waist buckles, place the sling down the back, close and tighten the waist support, and keep the arms outside.

• Take the leg sections down the sides, glide them under the thighs without twisting, and thread them through the modesty loop.
• Clip to the lower stud first, then the shoulder straps, until each clicks.
• Close and adjust the head support. After raising the person about 6 in (15 cm), retighten the waist buckle if needed.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

Use it only on a clip spreader bar, never on a loop bar.

• The safe working load is 600 lb (272 kg); the lower of the sling and lift limits wins.
• Check the straps, fabric and label before every use, and stop using a sling that is frayed, snagged or has a torn label.
• Wash at 95 C (203 F) at most with a non-biological detergent, close all fastenings first, do not iron, and dry at 50 C (122 F) or less.
