Description

The Savaria Manual Birthing Sling BIRTH1 is an emergency evacuation sling for birthing pools. It is a manual lifting device, not a hoist sling, and it needs at least four trained caregivers.

What is it for?

  • For getting a person out of a birthing pool quickly in an emergency.
  • Soft polyester mesh with large holes drains water fast.
  • Colour-coded grab handles and edging: four handles on each side.
  • It is a manual handling aid; correct manual handling practice and training are required.

Will it fit?

  • One size: 110 cm (43.3 in) wide and 173 cm (68.1 in) long.
  • The maker's fit table gives 96-104 cm around the torso and 144-160 cm head to foot.
  • Check those measures before the birth unit relies on it.

How is it used?

  • Put the bed at the pool edge at the same level and lay a slide sheet on it.
  • Place the sling centrally, not twisted, with all coloured handles visible: four on each side.
  • If needed, add noodle floats under the knees and back and an inflatable ring around the neck.
  • Slip the sling under the person with the same colour on each side, as low as possible while still supporting the head.
  • Each of the four caregivers takes two handles of the same colour and wraps the loops around the hands.
  • Use the water's buoyancy with three gentle bounces, then raise the person up and over onto the bed; glide them on the slide sheet.

What are its limits?

  • It is a manual lifting device only; never hang it from a hoist.
  • A minimum of four caregivers is required.
  • A hoistable version exists; BIRTH1 is the manual sling.

Care and checks

  • Wash at 185 F (85 C) and tumble dry low, max 50 C; close the fastenings, use non-biological detergent and do not iron.
  • Check the straps, material, label and rating before each use, and remove the sling at the first sign of wear.

How does it compare?

The slings range covers hoist slings. A patient lift is the hoist for a routine transfer. See pool lifts for pool access equipment.

Frequently asked questions

How many caregivers does it need?

At least four. Each takes two handles of the same colour on each side.

Can it be used with a hoist?

No. BIRTH1 is a manual lifting device only. A hoistable version exists as a separate product.

How many handles does it have?

Four on each side, colour-coded so each caregiver can match a pair.

How is the birthing sling washed?

185 F (85 C), then a low tumble no hotter than 50 C.
