SPAN Encore is a long-term care bed package built on the Encore MC9R family, with a retractable GlideAlign deck and ReadyWide width expansion.
What does it do and how does it work?
- The GlideAlign deck retracts 12 inches (30 cm) as the head section rises, so the bed shortens while the person sits up.
- ReadyWide sets the width at 36, 39 or 42 inches (91, 99 or 107 cm).
- The deck adjusts from 7-7/8 to 31 inches (20 to 79 cm) above the floor, and SmartStop pauses at the 12.5 inch (318 mm) low-height zone.
- Four DC linear actuators move the back and knee sections and the height; the back raises to 70 degrees and the knee to 30 degrees.
- The safe working load is 600 lb (272 kg), including accessories and bedding.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- It suits a long-term care resident in a facility, with staff who assess the resident and match the rails, boards and mattress.
- It is not for home care; choose a homecare or full electric hospital bed for a home.
- It is not for a resident over 450 lb (204 kg), or when the resident, mattress and accessories together exceed the 600 lb (272 kg) safe working load.
Will it fit?
- Sleep surface lengths are 76, 80 or 84 inches (193, 203 or 213 cm); overall length is 82, 86 or 90 inches (208, 218 or 229 cm).
- The 84 inch sleep surface needs the 4 inch extender kit.
- Width is 36, 39 or 42 inches (91, 99 or 107 cm); with side rails it is 40.5, 43.5 or 46.5 inches (103, 110 or 118 cm).
- The deck height ranges from 7-7/8 to 31 inches (20 to 79 cm).
Which build should I choose?
- MC9R is the base bed; MC9RW adds ReadyWide; MC9RZ adds the built-in backup battery; MC9RWZ adds both.
- The page selects the bed size, board size, board style, finish and accessories; confirm which MC9 code matches the chosen build.
- Board sizes are a 36, 40 or 43 inch pair; the finish options are Shiraz Cherry, Candle Light, Summer Flame, Choco, Hardrock Maple and Valley Oak.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Rails, boards and the mattress must be matched to the bed to reduce entrapment gaps, and the resident must be assessed.
- Rails are not included in the package options; choose a compatible Encore rail separately.
- The control box and actuators are covered for 5 years, the frame and the welds for 15 years, and batteries, pendants, cables and accessories for 1 year.

Can this bed go into a private home?
No. The Encore MC9R is a long-term care bed for facility use.
Does every build include a battery?
No. MC9RZ and MC9RWZ have the built-in backup battery; MC9R and MC9RW do not.
Are half rails included?
No. The package options do not add rails; choose a compatible Encore rail separately.
The Span warranty runs 15 years on the frame and welds and 5 years on electrics.

Warranty details
Span Medical Products Canada warrants the Encore resident care bed against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use and service, from the date of first delivery by Span.
- Frame and welds on steel structural components: 15 years.
- Electrical components (control box and actuators): 5 years.
- Batteries, hand pendants, foot end controllers and cables: 1 year.
- Parts subject to wear and bed accessories: 1 year.
- Labour is not covered; shipping is covered in the first year only.
- Covers the original purchaser only. Claims are made in writing within the warranty period.
- Excludes abuse, misuse, poor maintenance, excessive loads, and repairs or changes Span has not approved.
