Description
A bariatric resident needs a chair wide enough to sit in properly, not a standard chair with a bigger label. The Beka Leon is the extra-wide chair of the range, on a reinforced frame: part 920124500, LEON in BAROLO.
Room for a larger person
The seat and back cushions are 545 mm (21.5 in) across, wider than the other two chairs in the range, and the chair carries 230 kg (507 lb).
It weighs 73 kg (160.9 lb) and is 655 mm (25.8 in) wide, with a chassis 575 mm (22.6 in) outside and 350 mm (13.8 in) inside, so the room needs that floor plus carer space.
Tilt and height, from one remote
The chassis tilts to 25 degrees, stepless, and the seat rises and falls 210 mm between 560 mm and 780 mm (22.0 to 30.7 in). The Leon has no separate backrest motor, so it does not reach the 55 degrees of the other tilting chair in the range.
The cable remote holds two memory keys and a Park key.
Hygiene and transfers
The nursing opening locks shut for showering and opens for commode use, and a bedpan holder is available. Armrests, leg supports and footrests adjust and swing clear.
It parks over a Beka NORA or CARLO lift, the usual way to transfer a larger person. Lock all four braked castors first.
Battery and safety
The chair runs on its own 25 V battery: the charge lead is magnetic and takes about six hours, and do not use the chair while it is charging. A power cut leaves the seat where it is, because the motors hold their position.
The electrics are splash-proof, protection class II, type B applied part, rated for two minutes of movement then an 18-minute pause. Ask the person's doctor first if they have osteoporosis, back pain, brittle bone disease, mental confusion or seizures.
How does it compare?
- Drive deluxe bariatric shower chair: a wider non-powered chair.
- Drive tilting aluminium shower commode: a tilting attendant chair.
- Bathroom safety: the rest of the range.
- Bath benches: the simpler answer for seated washing.
