Description
The Drive Balanced Aire non-powered convertible mattress, model BA9600-NP, is a 7 in (18 cm) reactive air-and-foam mattress replacement, 35 by 80 in (89 by 203 cm), rated 500 lbs (227 kg). It works without power and converts to a powered alternating surface with a separate pump.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Eight non-circular air cylinders run laterally under the body and self-adjust to weight and pressure.
- Above the cells are high-density foam and a 2.5 in (6.4 cm) visco-elastic foam top, zoned for pressure redistribution.
- A heel slope lowers pressure at the heels.
- The high-density foam perimeter gives firm edge support and eases transfers.
- The removable 4-way stretch PU cover is fluid resistant, low shear and vapour permeable; the foam and cover are antimicrobial, antifungal and latex-free.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- A person whose care team recommends a reactive, non-powered support surface.
- A home or long-term care setting where power is unreliable or a pump is not wanted.
- Drive states the mattress is indicated for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers when used with a comprehensive management plan. The care team decides.
Will it fit?
- Sizes: BA9600-NP 35 x 80 x 7 in (89 x 203 x 18 cm), 500 lbs (227 kg); NP-42 42 x 80 x 7 in (107 x 203 x 18 cm), 750 lbs (340 kg); NP-84 35 x 84 x 7 in (89 x 213 x 18 cm), 500 lbs (227 kg).
- Remove the old mattress and check the deck, rails and transfer height.
- Fit it with no gaps between the mattress and the bed frame or rails. Health Canada recommends gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends. See bed rails.
- A used mattress cannot be returned, so measure first. See the return policy.
Using it day to day
- The black tube ends ship unattached; connect them to hold the air for static use.
- If it feels too firm, briefly disconnect the tubes to release air, then reconnect.
- Wipe the cover with neutral detergent, or machine wash at 120 F (49 C) or less and tumble dry low; do not bleach.
- For alternating pressure, add the 14005E or BA9600-PUMP control unit. It runs a 5-minute cycle at 4 LPM.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- As supplied it is non-powered: there is no alternating pressure until a pump is added.
- It is a 7 in mattress replacement, not a thin overlay.
- Unstable spinal cord injuries are a contraindication.

Can it be used during a power outage?
Yes. The non-powered base is reactive and needs no electricity to support the person.

Yes. It is a 7 in replacement; remove the old mattress first.

Drive DeVilbiss warrants the Balanced Aire self adjusting convertible mattress (BA9600-NP, BA9600-NP-84, BA9600-NP-42) to the original purchaser against defects in material and workmanship, from the date of purchase.
- Mattress: 5 years.
- Control unit, if added: 1 year.
- Covers repair or replacement, parts and labour; shipping, handling and disposal are not included.
- Keep proof of purchase; the warranty is void without it.
- Excludes cover sheets and disposables, normal wear and tear, abuse, fire, flood, power failure, moisture damage to the foam, and damage from using the mattress or its handles to transfer or move a person.
- Void if repaired or modified by anyone Drive has not approved in writing.
