Drive 18707 Pediatric Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, Clinical Use

The Drive 18707 is a pediatric fingertip pulse oximeter for hospital and hospital-type facility use: it spot-checks oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate in pediatric patients. It is not a home monitor for watching a sick child, and it is licensed by Health Canada (medical device licence 98256).

What does it do and how does it work?

• Measures: SpO2 and pulse rate, shown on a four-way OLED screen with six display modes and brightness from 1 to 10.
• Finger: fits a fingertip 0.3 to 1.0 in (7.6 to 25.4 mm) wide.
• Power: two AAA alkaline batteries; about 30 hours of use, with a low battery indicator.
• No alarms: the device has no alarms and is not for continuous monitoring.
• Included: a lanyard, a silicone case and a hang bag.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

• Intended setting: hospitals and hospital-type facilities, for a pediatric spot-check; it is only an adjunct to patient assessment.
• Home use: do not buy it to monitor a child at home. The MQ3000 and MQ3200 are sports and aviation devices, not home medical monitors either.
• Transport: not for use during transport outside a healthcare facility.
• Alarms or continuous watching: it cannot do either; do not use it where an alarm is required.
• Prescription: this item is listed as prescription required; ask us before ordering so we can confirm the process.

Will it fit?

• Use it on a fingertip 0.3 to 1.0 in (7.6 to 25.4 mm); it is shaped for pediatric fingers.
• Do not leave it on one site for more than half an hour.
• Do not use it in an MRI, CT or explosive atmosphere, and do not sterilise it.

Using it day to day

• Clean the finger with alcohol before and after, and place the finger fully into the clip.
• Keep still until the reading settles. A low or no signal powers the unit off after about 8 seconds; that is not an oxygen or pulse alarm.
• Wipe the silicone finger contact with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth; do not pour or spray liquid inside.
• Keep the battery door, battery and lanyard away from young children; they can choke, and a long lanyard can strangle.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

• SpO2 accuracy: ±3% from 70% to 99%; no accuracy is defined from 0% to 69%.
• Pulse accuracy: ±2 bpm from 30 to 99 bpm, and ±2% from 100 to 235 bpm.
• Health Canada: readings can be less accurate with darker skin, as oxygen falls, and with nail polish, artificial or long nails or cold fingers. Do not use one reading alone.
• Use life and warranty: about five years at 15 measurements a day of 10 minutes each; 2-year warranty by repair or replacement, excluding misuse, negligence and normal wear.
