Description

The Handicare EasyGlide is a polyethylene sliding board for seated transfers between a wheelchair, bed, toilet or car seat. Four models: 5020, 5050, 5060 and 5070.

What does it do and how does it work?

It bridges the gap between two seats so the user slides across rather than stands.

  • The top is smooth and low-friction, the corners are rounded, and anti-slip tape underneath keeps it still.
  • The 5020 and 5050 are three-part boards whose long sides fold against the wheelchair wheel to keep clothing clean.
  • The 5050 is the longest at 750 mm (29.5 in) for car transfers; 5060 and 5070 are single boards.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

It suits a seated person who can take part in the move, alone or with a caregiver.

  • An active user can transfer alone, holding the armrest.
  • If the person needs support, add an EasyBelt or FlexiBelt.
  • A person who cannot sit or bear weight needs a lift and sling instead.

Will it fit?

The load rating depends on the gap the board bridges: it falls as the gap widens.

  • 5020: 600 x 330 mm (23.6 x 13.0 in); 150 kg (330 lbs) at a 5 cm (2 in) gap, 135 kg (297 lbs) at 10 cm, 125 kg (275 lbs) at 20 cm.
  • 5050: 750 x 330 mm (29.5 x 13.0 in); 170 kg (375 lbs) at 5 cm, 150 kg (330 lbs) at 10 cm, 135 kg (297 lbs) at 20 cm.
  • 5060: 600 x 250 mm (23.6 x 9.8 in). 5070: 450 x 200 mm (17.7 x 7.9 in). Both hold 150 kg (330 lbs) at 5 cm and 135 kg (297 lbs) at 10 cm.

Using it day to day

Place the wheelchair at an angle to the bed, as close as possible, and remove the armrest and leg supports nearest the bed.

  • Lay the board like a bridge; place a bendable long side against the wheelchair wheel.
  • Lean the user slightly away to slide the board under them.
  • The user leans to the wheelchair, slides across, then leans back to settle into the chair.
  • Clean with soap and water; disinfect with 70 percent ethanol or 45 percent isopropanol.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

It is a transfer aid for short gaps, not a lifting device.

  • EasyBelt or FlexiBelt adds support; a FootStool raises the knees.
  • Never leave the user unattended during a transfer.
  • Before each use, bend the board; it should feel elastic and rigid, and a weakened board is discarded.

How does it compare?

More transfer aids are under patient lifts.

Frequently asked questions

Can a heavier person use the shortest board?

Yes. The 5070 holds 150 kg (330 lbs) at a 5 cm (2 in) gap, like the 5020; the gap decides the load.

How long should the board last?

Up to 10 years of normal use. Check it before each use and discard a weakened board.

Can the user transfer alone?

Yes, if they are active: hold the armrest and lean toward the chair. Someone who needs support uses a belt.
