The Fortress S425 is a four-wheel outdoor scooter from Sunrise Medical, rated 330 lb (150 kg), with a 12 km/h top speed, a 119 in turning radius and suspension at every wheel.
Who is it for?
A rider to 330 lb who wants a stable four-wheel scooter for pavement and paths, with a large reclining seat, flip-up armrests and legroom. It is not a car-boot scooter: it splits into a 77 lb (35 kg) seat, the batteries and the chassis.
If it must go into a car, see travel scooters. If you need postural support, ask your therapist about a power wheelchair.
How does it drive?
Top speed is 12 km/h (7.5 mph) and the maximum safe slope is 8 degrees at 150 kg. Range is 25 km (15.5 mi) on the ISO 7176-4 test at 100 kg, with a benchmark range of 42 km (26 mi).
Tires are 12" (300 mm) pneumatic at 40 psi, with 23 mm of front suspension travel and 11 mm at the rear.
Braking is regenerative with an electromechanical parking brake, and stopping distance from top speed is 4 m. The LED lighting includes front and rear lights, indicators and brake lights.
Will it fit your home and car?
It is 53" (1345 mm) long and 26" (655 mm) wide. The turning radius is 119" (3.03 m), so it needs a wide arc. Ground clearance is 60 mm and it climbs a 50 mm (2 in) curb forwards only. It does not fold flat; the seat and batteries come off and the tiller folds for storage.
Batteries, charging and care
Two 12 V 55 Ah gel or AGM batteries and an 8 amp automatic charger are included. Charge after each day of use and never charge a frozen battery. We replace worn batteries.
Seat, tiller and controls
The reclining high-back seat is 19" x 19" (490 x 490 mm), with 4" (100 mm) of fore and aft adjustment, a headrest and flip-up armrests. Seat height is 20.6" (523 mm) in three positions. The adjustable tiller has a wig-wag delta handlebar and an LED console.
Colours and options
Red or Urban Grey. Heavy-duty suspension is a factory option. Add-ons include a rear storage bag, a rear walker or wheelchair mount, and a cover.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take the S425 apart to move it?
Into three parts: the seat at 77 lb (35 kg), the two batteries at 80 lb (36 kg) together, and the chassis.
Is it safe to leave outside with the cover on?
The cover is made for outside storage, but never drive or move the scooter with it fitted.
Can I fit a rear basket?
It comes with the wire basket on the tiller. A rear basket needs the right rear bar, so check the mount first.
Can I ride it on Toronto sidewalks?
Ontario treats scooter riders as pedestrians; Toronto allows mobility devices on sidewalks, under its own bylaws.

Warranty details
Sunrise Medical warrants the Fortress S425 components for the periods below, against defects in normal use.
- Main frame weldment, steering column, tiller and tiller gas strut: 5 years.
- Controller, throttle and harnesses, motor and transaxle, drum brake, wheel rims, console and charger: 2 years.
- Shrouds, seat weldments, seat upholstery, tires and inner tubes, lights and indicators: 1 year.
- Excludes brake pads, motor brushes, wheel bearings, chain, fuses, bulbs and arm pads as wear items, cosmetic wear, and equipment modified other than by Sunrise.
- Labour is not included. Repairs are done by an authorized Sunrise Medical dealer.
