The Joerns Hoyer Up is a manual stand aid for short moves when the person can stand and hold the bar.
Who is the Hoyer Up for?
- Someone who can support their weight standing, keep balance with support, grip the crossbar and follow instructions.
- Bed, chair, wheelchair, toilet or commode, on a flat floor, over a short distance.
- Not a powered sit-to-stand, and not a lift for someone who cannot stand. A carer has to be there. It is not for self-transfer.
Will the base fit the furniture?
- Legs closed are 23.6 in (600 mm) outside, so measure the doorway against that.
- Legs open are 33.3 in (845 mm) outside and 28.5 in (725 mm) inside. Open them for a wide chair.
- The frame width on the spec sheet is 24.8 in (630 mm). That is not the open-leg width.
- Leg height is 4.3 in (110 mm). Overall height is 43.3 in (1100 mm). Length is 37.4 in (950 mm).
- Knee pad height is 19 in from the footplate. Turning radius on the manual is 40.9 in.
- Front casters are 3 in. Rear casters are 4 in and they brake. Weight is 72.8 lb (33 kg).
How does a transfer work?
- Swing the seats out, roll in, put the feet on the footplate and the knees on the pad, then brake both rear casters.
- Left pedal opens the legs. Right pedal closes them.
- The person pulls up on the crossbar. Knees stay on the pad. Swing the seats back before they sit.
- Push only on the handle, at a walking pace. Do not take a loaded aid over a slope steeper than 1:12, and do not park it loaded on a slope.

How does it come apart, and how does it compare?
- Three pieces, no tools: base, seat tube and mast. The base alone is 43 lb.
- A powered stand lift does the lifting for someone who cannot pull up. See sit-to-stand lifts and the Hoyer Journey.
- Floor lifts, for someone who cannot stand, are under patient lifts. A room check is free: book a home assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can it lift someone off the floor?
No. The manual is for short moves between a bed, chair, wheelchair or toilet, not a floor lift.
Can the person use it alone?
No. Joerns says not to use it for self-transfer, so a carer stays with the person for the move.
What if the hallway slopes?
Do not move a loaded Up on a slope steeper than about 1:12, and do not leave it parked on any slope while loaded.
Are the loop stand-aid slings the right ones?
No. The maker lists the Joerns Deluxe Standing Sling with clips for this aid, and a loop sling is the wrong clip for these pins.
