Description
The PressureGuard APM2, part 5880LR-29, is an 80 by 35 by 7 in (203 by 89 by 18 cm) powered mattress with the model 5900 digital control unit, rated 350 lbs (159 kg).
What does it do and how does it work?
- Four urethane air cylinders run head to foot under a Geo-Matt foam top with more than 800 individually articulating cells.
- The head-to-foot cylinder layout gives more support in the seat when the head of the bed is raised.
- The patented Safety Edge has a cradling effect that Span says helps minimize the risk of falls and entrapment and encourages the person toward the centre of the bed.
- The LifeSpan cover is antimicrobial bi-directional stretch with silicone shear bands underneath at the heels, sacrum and shoulder blades.
- The control unit runs alternating pressure, lateral rotation or Float, with a timed Auto Firm for transfers and care.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- A person up to 350 lbs (159 kg) on a 35 by 80 in deck whose care plan may need alternating pressure or lateral rotation.
- Someone over 350 lbs needs a bariatric mattress instead.
- A raised side perimeter is a different model, the APM2 Safety Supreme.
Will it fit?
- 80 in long, 35 in wide, 7 in high (203 x 89 x 18 cm).
- APM2 parts come in 75 or 84 in lengths and 39 or 42 in widths.
- The Safety Edge is part of the mattress, not a rail. Check the gaps to the rails with the mattress on the bed; Health Canada recommends gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends. See bed rails.
- A mattress that has touched skin cannot be returned, so measure first. See the return policy.
Using it day to day
- A recessed toggle on the mattress side selects alternating pressure or lateral rotation, with no hose change. Either mode runs a 10-minute cycle.
- Auto Firm holds for 20 minutes for transfers, ADLs or CPR, then returns to the previous mode.
- Low pressure and power failure each have an indicator light, and the audible alarm can be muted.
- Wipe the cover with neutral suds and lukewarm water, or disinfect with a phenolic or quaternary product; no harsh solvents.
- Check the rear air filter and hand-wash it in warm water with mild detergent.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- The control unit weighs 6.3 lbs and is UL listed.
- Warranty is three years on the mattress, two years on the cover and 18 months on the control unit; see the Warranty tab.
How does it compare?
- APM2 Safety Supreme: the same surface with raised sides.
- PressureGuard APM: the earlier air-and-foam surface.
- Alternating pressure mattresses: the category.
Frequently asked questions
Can it alternate and rotate at the same time?
No. The toggle selects alternating pressure or lateral rotation; Float is the third mode.
What does CPR mode do?
Auto Firm gives the firmest surface for 20 minutes; place a crash board and follow CPR procedures.
Is the raised-perimeter version this same part?
No. Safety Supreme uses SAF part numbers and a higher side; this is the standard 7 in APM2.
