Description
The Quickie Xtender replaces a manual wheelchair's rear wheels with motorised ones, adding power to the push while keeping the folding frame and the manual feel.
What does it do, and how does it work?
- The motorised wheels increase the force applied to the handrims, reducing energy use by as much as 45 per cent.
- The two units synchronise their speeds, which helps where one arm is stronger, and keep the chair tracking straight.
- Rollback prevention holds the chair on a climb and downhill speed control steadies the descent; neither needs programming.
- LED indicators on the wheel hub show battery level and alerts.
- Lithium: about 22 miles (35 km) and 9 hours, charging in 3 to 4.5 hours. Nickel: about 14 miles (23 km) and 7 hours, charging in 2.5 to 3 hours. Top speed 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h).
- 37 lbs (16.8 kg) for the pair with the lithium battery, 35 lbs (15.9 kg) with nickel; capacity 265 lbs (120 kg).
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- A manual wheelchair user who needs help on hills, ramps and longer distances but wants to keep the chair.
- A chair that drives itself: a power wheelchair.
- A front handbike instead of powered rear wheels: the Empulse StreetJet.
Will it fit?
- It fits the Quickie 2, 2HP, Q7, 5R, 7R, GT and GP Series and the Zippie X'Cape, with the 2 Lite and QRi through Built-4-Me.
- An axle plate adapter fits on each side of the frame and also gives seat-to-floor height adjustment.
- The wheel units then attach on quick releases, and the battery pack lifts out of its cradle.
- We confirm the chair model before you order.
Using it day to day
- Fit the axle plate adapters, then mount the wheel units on the chair's rear axle.
- Charge lithium in 3 to 4.5 hours or nickel in 2.5 to 3 hours; the quick-sling pack lifts out and travels with the chair.
- The units synchronise and handle rollback and downhill speed without programming.
- Remove the wheel units and battery to return the chair to manual use; the pair packs flat in a car boot.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- 265 lbs (120 kg), and only on the chair models listed.
- Top speed is 3.7 mph (6.0 km/h), and range falls with hills, load and temperature.
- Power unit and charger: 1-year warranty.
- The Xtender is a power add-on, not a power wheelchair; it needs a manual wheelchair frame.
Which version should I choose?
- Lithium or nickel battery.
- Stainless steel or plastic-coated handrims.
- Seat-to-floor height set through the axle plate adapters.
How does it compare?
- The Empulse StreetJet adds a front handbike that the rider steers.
- A power wheelchair drives itself and does not need a manual frame.
- More wheelchair accessories.
