Description

The Ride Designs Java Back (JB series) is a rigid wheelchair back with an aluminum shell, made for a user whose assessment calls for pelvic support and trunk balance set independently.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Independent support: pelvic support and trunk balance each adjust without changing the other.
  • Adjustment range: 20 degrees of angle (5 forward, 15 back), 2 in (5 cm) of seat depth and 2 in (5 cm) of back width.
  • Release: the shell lifts off its latches with one hand and clips back on.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

It suits a person whose posture needs more support at the pelvis than at the trunk, or the reverse. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist assesses the fit and sets the back up.

Choose the Ride Custom Back for a made-to-measure shape, or the Java Decaf Back for a growing child.

Will it fit?

  • Chair width: each back fits chairs from 1 in (2.5 cm) narrower to 2 in (5 cm) wider; a 16 in back fits 15 to 18 in chairs.
  • Back canes: the clamps fit round tubing 3/4 in (1.9 cm) to 1 in (2.5 cm); screws for each diameter come in the kit.
  • Tilt and recline: only the Grande shell ships with the increased-strength hardware for tilt-in-space or reclining chairs.

Using it day to day

  • Removal: lift both latches, tilt the shell forward and up; the hardware stays on the chair.
  • Flexa-just stays: aluminum strips behind the foam, bent by hand to support the gluteal area, even while the user sits.
  • Cover: machine wash warm at 60 C, hang dry; no bleach, iron or dry cleaning.
  • Shell and hardware: wipe with a damp cloth or mild disinfectant, never isopropyl alcohol or solvents.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • Cushions: the maker recommends a Ride Java, Forward, Custom 2 or Custom AccuSoft cushion under the back.
  • Headrest: mounting holes are on the Tall and Grande shells only.
  • Weight limit: 300 lbs (136 kg).
  • Stability: a back set further rearward shifts weight back, so check the chair for anti-tippers.
  • Service life: check the fasteners every six months; the maker rates the back for at most four years.

Which version should I choose?

  • Depth: Regular 3 in (8 cm) for a standard fit, Deep 6 in (15 cm) for more lateral containment, with DP on the item code.
  • Laterals: fixed or swing-away trunk supports in flat or curved shapes, when the assessment calls for them.

How does it compare?

A Prism TrueFitt is a foam-padded shell with less pelvic adjustment; the Ride Custom Back is built from a scan to an exact shape. The wheelchair backrests range lists the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can it go on a chair with flat or oval frame tubing?

No. The clamps are made for round tubing only; send us the frame shape and we check for an adapter.

Can I move the back to a second wheelchair?

The latches stay on the first chair, so a second chair needs its own mounting hardware.

What do the pelvic wedges do?

They add support at the back of the hip bones, fixed behind the foam where the pelvis needs it.
