The Blake Medical Select Air Max (SAMAXSYSK010120-B) is an 8 in true low air loss mattress for a 36 in hospital bed.
What does it do and how does it work?
Eighteen 8 in cells, in the head, seat and foot, either pulse or stay still.
- Pulsation changes the pressure 20% every 15, 7 or 1 minute. Blake states this mode is for prevention and treatment of stage I to IV pressure injuries.
- Static mode holds the cells still and sends air under the cover so moisture can leave the skin.
- Auto Comfort sets pressure from the person's weight. Ten levels, Auto Firm, and Upright mode are on the control unit.
- System Lock blocks accidental changes. A CPR button deflates the mattress. Blake states the side air bolsters reduce entrapment risk. They are not rails.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
Blake states it is for stage I to IV pressure injuries (bedsores), heavy perspiration, or long days in bed. The person's nurse, doctor or therapist decides.
- Over 400 lbs (182 kg), or wider than 36 in (91 cm), Blake does not rate this model for bariatric use.
- Cells that empty in turn, or a firm foam edge for a solo transfer, call for a different mattress.
Will it fit?
Width is 36 in (91 cm) and height is 8 in (20 cm). Length is 80 in (203 cm), or 84 in (213 cm) with the foot pillow.
- Measure the hospital bed deck. It sits higher than a 5 or 6 in foam mattress.
- Health Canada wants rail gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) and end gaps under 60 mm (2 3/8 in). Test the bed rails: air can compress. Use the lower of 400 lbs (182 kg) and the bed's limit. We confirm the length and the foot pillow before you order.
Using it day to day
Connect the hose and plug in the control unit before use.
- Press Auto Comfort, or one of 10 levels. Use Auto Firm for a transfer, then press System Lock. The nylon cover is antimicrobial, fluid resistant and vapour permeable.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
It replaces the mattress on a 36 in deck. It is not a topper.
- Airflow stops if the control unit loses power.
- Warranty terms are in the Warranty tab. A used mattress cannot come back under the return policy.
Which version should I choose?
Two lengths: 80 in with no foot pillow, or 84 in with one.
- SAMAXSYSK010120-B has no foot pillow. SAMAXSYSK004120-B adds the foot pillow so the feet stay off the footboard.
