Description

The Span America PressureGuard CFT, part 8080-29, is a non-powered air mattress for a hospital bed. It measures 80 x 35 x 7 in (203 x 89 x 18 cm).

What does it do and how does it work?

It rebalances its air as the person moves, with no pump or power.

  • Constant Force Technology links the air cylinders to elastic reservoirs, so the surface follows the person's weight and position.
  • The segmented Geo-Matt foam top sits between the person and the air system.
  • A Heel Slope at the foot lowers pressure under the heels.
  • Firm side bolsters form the Safety Edge, which keeps its shape at the edge.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

Span describes the CFT for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in clients with a Waterlow score of 20 or more.

  • The person's nurse, doctor or therapist decides which surface suits their skin and risk.
  • Do not use it for a person with an unstable spinal cord injury.
  • Choose a powered low air loss or turning mattress if the care plan calls for either; this surface has neither.

Will it fit?

Match the 35 in width to the deck, then check the bed's own limit.

  • The mattress is rated 500 lbs (227 kg); the lower of that and the bed's safe working load applies.
  • The 7 in (18 cm) height adds to the deck height. Health Canada advises gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) in zones 1 to 3 and 60 mm (2 3/8 in) in zone 4.
  • A used mattress cannot be returned under our return policy.

Using it day to day

Place it blue side up, with the Heel Slope at the foot, and centre the person with the heels on the slope.

  • The mattress arrives set from the factory. Fit the OUT auto-adjust valve to each port to set it on the bed.
  • Check the air level every 12 months. Raise it with the hand pump, then let the OUT valve release the excess.
  • Wipe the cover with neutral soap suds and lukewarm water, rinse and air dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Use a hospital-grade disinfectant when soiled and avoid harsh cleaners or solvents.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

It fits a standard hospital bed frame of the matching size.

  • It is non-powered, so there is no blower, hose or power failure to manage.
  • It does not provide low air loss or alternating pressure.
  • The hand pump and service kit are a separate order.

How does it compare?

A foam mattress has no air system to check. A powered alternating mattress gives active therapy but needs a control unit. The Custom Care Convertible has a foam shell and can add power. See medical mattresses.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need power?

No. It has no blower or cord; the air is set by hand.

Does it come with a pump?

No powered pump. A hand pump and service kit are a separate order.

How often does the air need checking?

About every 12 months; top it up with the hand pump and reset it with the OUT valve.
