Description

The Ki Mobility Axiom Lateral Back is a lightweight aluminium wheelchair back, shaped to 3.7 in (9.3 cm) of lateral profile, with no lumbar pad.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Contour: the same 3.65 in curve as the Posterior Lateral, without the lumbar pad, so the shell centre is flatter.
  • Shell: aluminium formed by Ki Mobility's Fulcrum bending, which the maker says is stiffer than roll forming.
  • Adjustments: 2 in (5.1 cm) of width, 3.3 in (8.3 cm) of height, 1.5 in (3.8 cm) of depth and 20 degrees of angle, on dual mounting slots.
  • Foam and cover: 1.3 in (3.3 cm) of high-resiliency foam under a nylon-spandex cover with a waterproof membrane.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • Moderate lateral positioning: for a rider who needs side support without a lumbar pad.
  • Lumbar support needed: the Posterior Lateral carries the same curve with an adjustable lumbar pad.
  • Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist settles the contour and hardware.

Will it fit?

  • Widths: 12 to 22 in (30.5 to 55.9 cm) in 2 in steps.
  • Heights: Low 8 to 12 in (20.3 to 30.5 cm), Mid 14 to 18 in and Tall 20 to 22 in.
  • Not a full grid: the 12 in wide shell comes 8, 12, 16 and 20 in high; the 18 in wide shell in every height; the 22 in wide shell only 10, 14, 18 and 22 in.
  • Order codes: AXLB plus the width and height, for example AXLB1618 for 16 in wide by 18 in high.
  • Capacity: 300 lb (136 kg) on DEX or FXT hardware and 400 lb (181 kg) on BTX.

Using it day to day

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • No lumbar pad: the shell is supplied without one.
  • Low heights: the Low sizes are not available with headrests or posture supports.
  • LWX hardware: it fits 12 to 18 in widths and 8 to 16 in heights only.

Which version should I choose?

  • Size: width from 12 to 22 in, and height from the Low, Mid or Tall group.
  • Hardware: DEX, BTX, FXT or LWX, within the LWX limits above.

How does it compare?

The Axiom Posterior Lateral has the same curve with a lumbar pad. A Prism Ultra Back is a fixed-shape foam back, and an Invacare Matrx E2 is a foam back with a standard 3 in contour. See all wheelchair backrests.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from the Posterior Lateral?

Both are shaped to the same curve. The Lateral Back has no lumbar pad, so the shell centre stays flatter.

Which hardware should I choose?

DEX for a quick release, BTX for the 400 lb rating, FXT or LWX where the back stays fixed; LWX has size limits.

Which height do I order?

Low covers 8 to 12 in, Mid 14 to 18 in and Tall 20 to 22 in; Low sizes take no headrest or posture supports.

Can the shell colour be matched?

Yes. There are 21 finishes and paint-to-match is offered at no extra charge.
