Description
The Silverback Prime is Blake Medical's lighter gel back, with an aluminium shell, 1.75 in (44 mm) of high-density foam and a 3.75 in (95 mm) wide gel strip down the spine.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Gel: a blue Geo-Matrix gel insert 3.75 in wide runs the full height of the back, set over the foam rather than across the whole face.
- Foam and shell: 1.75 in of high-density foam, 2.5 in with the gel, on an aluminium shell.
- Contours: Active 2.5 in (64 mm), Deep 4 in (102 mm) or Extra Deep 6 in (152 mm).
- Weight: Blake describes the Prime as the model to choose where the weight of the back matters.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Lighter build: for a seating plan that wants a gel back without the full gel face layer and extra foam of the Max.
- Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist chooses the height, the contour and the settings.
Will it fit?
- Widths: 14, 16, 18, 20 or 22 in (356 to 559 mm).
- Heights: 16 in Standard, 18 in Tall or 20 in Extra Tall.
- Standard builds: five widths by three heights in three contours, plus custom sizes.
- Code: P, width, S/T/XT height and A/D/XD contour; P16SD is 16 in wide, standard, deep.
- Capacity: 250 lbs (113 kg) at all degrees of tilt, in every contour, width and height.
- Pins: 0.5 in standard; 1 and 1.5 in pins fit a narrower back on a wider chair.
Using it day to day
- What arrives: the back in its cover with bracket and pins fitted, and a separate kit: clamps, stud plates, brackets, eight nuts and 0.5 in pins.
- Mounting: the rubber grip wraps the cane, the clamp tightens over it, and the bottom pins drop into slots with the top pins in the locks.
- Adjustment: 45 degrees of angle and 2 in (51 mm) of depth travel, set with the user seated.
- Care: wipe the cover with soap and water or machine wash it to 60 C, do not wring, lay flat to dry, no bleach; wipe the gel and keep the back out of strong light.
- Warranty: two years on the back, one year on the cover.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Cover: the standard fabric is a breathable four-way stretch; a wipeable fabric is available at extra cost.
- Quote build: the width, height, contour and fabric are settled in the assessment and priced on the quote; custom sizes are non-returnable, so read the return policy.
How does it compare?
The Silverback Max adds a full gel face layer, the Lunar Slim is a slimmer foam back, and the wheelchair backrests hub lists the range.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Prime and the Max?
The Prime has one gel strip down the spine and 1.75 in of foam; the Max adds a full pillow top gel layer and its own foam build, so it is the heavier back.
Is the 250 lb limit the same in every contour?
Yes. Blake rates the Prime at 250 lb at all degrees of tilt, in every contour, width and height.
How much adjustment does the hardware give?
Blake's quick-release hardware moves through 45 degrees of angle and 2 in of depth, so the back is set to the person rather than the chair.
