Description
The Invacare Matrx E2 Deep Back (model E2D) is a rigid wheelchair back whose shell curves 6 inches (152 mm) forward around the trunk. Motion Concepts builds it 14 to 20 inches wide and 6 to 20 inches high.
What does it do and how does it work?
- The moulded shell forms the 6 inch (152 mm) contour, so the back wraps around the trunk instead of stopping behind the shoulder blades.
- Ripple foam with airflow channels covers the shell, with a lumbar positioning pad at the lower back.
- MiniSet quick-release hardware is standard on 6 to 16 inch backs; EasySet on 18 and 20 inch backs.
- The plates set 40 degrees of angle (20 each way) and 2 inches (51 mm) of depth at the canes.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- It suits a wheelchair user whose prescription calls for a deep, wrapping back.
- Choose the standard Matrx E2 back for a 3 inch (76 mm) contour.
- Choose another back if side laterals are planned; Matrx does not offer them on the E2 Deep.
- An occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the size and contour in a seating assessment.
Will it fit?
- A 14 inch back fits chairs 13 to 16 inches wide; a 20 inch back fits chairs 19 to 22 inches wide.
- Widths run 14 to 20 inches in 1 inch steps, so odd widths are standard; heights run 6 to 20 inches in 2 inch steps.
- The hardware fits 1 inch canes, with inserts for 7/8 and 3/4 inch canes; nothing outside that range.
Using it day to day
- Set-up must be done by a qualified technician or healthcare provider, using only the supplied hardware.
- Check fasteners weekly and inspect hardware, foam and cover monthly for wear or compression.
- The Meshtex cover unclips and can be hand or machine washed at 60°C (140°F) or less on a delicate cycle; do not bleach or dry clean, and air dry.
- Motion Concepts warrants the back for two years to the original purchaser; the removable cover, punctures, tears and burns are excluded.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Matrx accessories include BackBone sacrolumbar support, PostureFlex abdominal support, privacy flaps, a chest harness interface and a Protect slipcover.
- Laterals are not available, and other makers' accessories are not recommended.
- Power tilt or recline needs fixed mounting hardware.
- For vehicle travel, move the person to a seat where possible; crash testing covers the E2S, not the E2 Deep, and transport needs a head support.
- The weight limit is 300 lbs (136 kg).

Frequently asked questions
Does a 6 inch contour make the back 6 inches thick?
No. Contour depth is how far the edges curve forward; the shell and foam stay thin.
Can the back be adjusted after the first fitting?
Yes. A technician can reset the angle, depth and height at the plates and pins.
Is a posture belt or chest harness a seatbelt?
No. They position the body only. Use the vehicle's belt and a head support.
