Description

The Invacare Matrx MAC Backrest is the adjustable contour back in the Matrx family: a dual layer foam back whose side contours move in depth, height and width.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Dual layer foam: SuperSoft HR foam over firm HR foam, so the firm layer holds the shape and the soft layer lets the person settle into it.
  • Side contours: both extensions come with the back on pivoting brackets, in 3.5, 6 or 9 in (89, 152 or 229 mm) depths; loaded inner width 5.5 to 12 in (140 to 305 mm).
  • Adjustable fit: the contours move in depth, height and width, with 1/2 in of width growth each side, and can be set with the user seated.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • Changing posture: for a person whose posture may change, or whose contour needs refining after the back is on the chair; on a fixed back, the shape is the shape.
  • Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist chooses the size, the contour depth and the hardware.
  • Fixed contour: the Matrx Elite TR and Matrx E2 are rigid backs with a 3 in contour.

Will it fit?

  • Sizes: 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20 in wide and 16, 18, 20 or 22 in long; MAC plus width and length, so MAC1818 is 18 x 18 in.
  • Custom: other sizes are quoted.
  • Back canes: 3/4 to 1 in (19 to 25 mm) outside diameter.
  • Chair width: the hardware reaches 1 in narrower to 2 in wider than the nominal back.
  • Capacity: 300 lbs (136 kg).

Using it day to day

  • Hardware: EasySet is standard, with height, depth, angle and rotation adjustment; Fixed, Extended Range, Heavy-Duty and Split hardware are options.
  • Power seating and heavy use: use the Fixed hardware on power seating; the Heavy-Duty hardware is for users up to 300 lb with high tone or heavy use.
  • After fitting: check the fasteners and the chair's balance, because moving the back changes the centre of gravity.
  • Care: wash the Meshtex cover warm up to 60 C (140 F) on a delicate cycle with neutral detergent; no bleach, softener or dry cleaning, and air dry fully.
  • Warranty: two years on the back for the original purchaser, materials and workmanship; the cover is excluded.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • Covers: Meshtex is standard; a Startex wipeable cover is available by quote.
  • Quote build: size, contour depth and hardware are settled in the assessment and priced on the quote; custom sizes are non-returnable, so read the return policy.
  • Extras: the SHAPE insert, PostureFlex, BackBone and chest harness interface are separate.

How does it compare?

The Matrx Elite TR and Matrx E2 are rigid backs with a fixed 3 in contour, and the wheelchair backrests hub lists the range.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the MAC different from a fixed Matrx back?

The MAC's two side contours are mounted on brackets, so they can be moved in depth, height and width after the back is on the chair.

How is the Dual Layer Foam model different from the MAC HUG?

Both use the same adjustable side contours and hardware; the Dual Layer uses the SuperSoft over firm HR foam, while the HUG uses the StaminaFibre insert.

Can I add a headrest?

The back includes a heavy-duty headrest interface, but the headrest itself is separate; confirm the model with the clinician.
