Description
The JAY Hand and Arm Supports from Sunrise Medical are wheelchair positioning accessories that hold the arm, wrist and hand in a set position: arm troughs in three lengths and padded wrist straps in three sizes.
What does it do and how does it work?
An arm trough cradles the forearm and hand in a foam-lined shell so the arm stays where the seating plan puts it.
- The trough is high-resiliency foam over wood, 5.5 in (14 cm) wide, with a VELCRO flap over the forearm.
- Contoured foam spreads contact along the arm.
- A neoprene and nylon wrist strap closes with a side release buckle and holds the wrist gently in one place, steadying the hand for a switch, tray or joystick.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Someone whose arm slides off the armrest or whose wrist curls into the lap, or whose hand must stay within reach of a switch, tray or joystick.
- Choose the trough for a whole forearm and hand; the wrist strap for gentle wrist guidance only.
- For the torso rather than the arm, choose an anterior trunk support or chest harness.
Will it fit?
Match the trough to the forearm length and the armrest, and the strap to the wrist circumference.
- Trough: 14, 18 or 22 in (36, 46 or 56 cm) long, all 5.5 in (14 cm) wide.
- Trough mounting: dual post or dual post height adjustable armrests with 3/4 in (1.9 cm) round tubing.
- Wrist strap: small 5.5 to 7 in (14 to 18 cm), medium 7.5 to 9 in (19 to 23 cm), large 9.5 to 11 in (24 to 28 cm); made to order outside those.
Using it day to day
Open the VELCRO flap and lift the arm out for a transfer.
- Fixed hardware holds one position; swing-away hardware lets the trough swing aside for a transfer.
- An extra padded strap can be added at order to secure the extremity.
- Lowered or removed side walls give a larger arm more room; a visco foam overlay adds memory foam.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
It fits only the armrest types listed.
- Not made for other armrest styles, and not a replacement for a trunk support or a sling.
- Contact surface: Reverse Dartex or neoprene standard; Micro Climatic, Naugahyde or sheep skin at no charge.
- Side band covers in ten colours at no charge, from Electric Lime to Volt Yellow.
How does it compare?
- JAY Y-Style anterior trunk support: holds the upper torso, not the arm.
- Bodypoint Stayflex chest support: a chest harness for the shoulders and trunk.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order an arm trough for one arm only?
Yes. Each trough is a single item, so order one per side.
Will the trough fit my armrests?
It fits dual post and dual post height adjustable armrests with 3/4 in (1.9 cm) round tubing.
What is the difference between the trough and the wrist strap?
The trough supports the whole forearm and hand; the wrist strap only positions the wrist.
Can the trough hold the forearm and hand together?
Yes. The VELCRO flap closes over the forearm, and an extra padded strap can be added at order.
