Description
The JAY Y-Style Anterior Trunk Support is a Y-shaped chest support from Sunrise Medical for a wheelchair rider whose one shoulder rolls forward.
What does it do and how does it work?
The Y straddles the rotated shoulder and a single band crosses the chest to the back of the backrest.
- One arm of the Y sits above the shoulder and one below, anchored to the back of the backrest.
- The lower strap runs diagonally across the trunk, and tension straps pull the shoulder back.
- The opposite shoulder has no strap, so that arm reaches freely.
- Neoprene contact surface.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- A rider who needs trunk rotation controlled and one shoulder held back while the other arm works.
- If both shoulders roll forward or the sternum needs a firm pad, a four-point chest support suits better.
Will it fit?
- Needs a solid backrest at about shoulder height and an installed pelvic belt, which is not included; a sling back needs a rigid backrest first.
- Long band A by short arm B: Early Intervention 15 x 7 in (38 x 18 cm), Small 19 x 8 in (48 x 20 cm), Medium 22 x 9 in (56 x 23 cm), Large 25 x 11 in (64 x 28 cm).
- A runs from the top of the shoulder across the chest; B is the short arm below it. A clinician measures with the rider seated; other sizes are made to order.
- Tell us which shoulder rotates forward so the Y is set to that side.
Using it day to day
- A qualified clinician or Sunrise Medical supplier fits it seated.
- Check the buckles, straps, comfort, height, neck clearance and hardware clashes.
- The rider must not slide down and no strap may restrict breathing; check the skin of anyone at risk of breakdown.
- It may be used in transit but is not crash tested; in a vehicle use restraints tested to SAE J2249 or ANSI/RESNA WC/20.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Maximum user weight equals the maximum user weight of the wheelchair it is fitted to. Intended lifetime is 5 years.
- Never use it without stabilizing the pelvis.
- It is not a seat belt or a transit-tested restraint.
Which version should I choose?
- Dynamic: high tone or involuntary movement.
- Structured: firm support through a day when positioning declines.
- Made to order: measurements outside the four standard sizes.
How does it compare?
- Bodypoint Stayflex: holds both shoulders with a firm sternal pad.
- Power Plus Relax headrest: supports the head rather than the trunk.
Frequently asked questions
Will it press on a feeding tube?
The Y shape limits interference, but the lower band crosses the chest; check the site at fitting.
How long is it meant to last?
The intended lifetime is 5 years. That figure is not the warranty term.
Will it work on a tilt chair?
Yes, if the chair has a solid back at about shoulder height and an installed pelvic belt.
Can it go in a car?
Only with transit-tested restraints. It is not crash tested and is not a seat belt.
