Joerns Bariatric Foam Mattress, BGF Series

The Joerns BariGel 1000 bariatric mattress (six BGF codes) is an 8 in (20 cm) gel-infused foam mattress in 42, 48 or 54 in (107, 122 or 137 cm) widths and 80 or 84 in (203 or 213 cm) lengths.

What does it do and how does it work?

• A gel-infused surface layer sits over high-density foam base layers.
• The stretch zipper cover is removable, fluid resistant and shear reducing.
• The six codes pair each width with each length.
• The mattress is 8 in (20 cm) high and has no pump or air cells.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

• A person who needs a bariatric foam surface on a bed deck wide enough for a 42, 48 or 54 in mattress.
• Home care, long-term care or a facility.
• The care team decides whether this surface suits the person's skin and risk.
• Someone who needs alternating pressure or low air loss needs a powered surface instead.

Will it fit?

• Widths: 42 in (107 cm), 48 in (122 cm) or 54 in (137 cm). Measure between the rails before you choose.
• Lengths: 80 in (203 cm) or 84 in (213 cm). An 80 in pad overhangs a shorter deck.
• The 54 in width needs a bariatric deck; see bariatric beds.
• At 8 in (20 cm) high, recheck the gap between the mattress and the rails. Health Canada recommends gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends; a thicker mattress changes them. See bed rails.
• A mattress that has touched skin cannot be returned, so measure first. See the return policy.

Using it day to day

• Zip the stretch cover onto the foam and check the seams at each linen change.
• The cover is fluid resistant and shear reducing; follow your facility's cleaning protocol for the foam and cover.
• Replacement stretch covers come in the same six sizes; ask us to quote one.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

• It fits bariatric bed decks that take the matching width and length.
• It is a foam surface: no pump, no alternating pressure and no low air loss.
• The 1000 in the model name is not a published mattress weight limit. Use the mattress within the bed's safe working load.
• The BariMatt 1000 Plus is a different Joerns surface with a 1000 lb rating.
