Description

The Joerns BariMatt 1000 Plus, part B1000-4884NZBA, is an expandable all-foam mattress for a bariatric bed. Zip-on side panels and a length extender change its size, and it has no pump.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • A 1 in (2.5 cm) visco-elastic topper sits over multi-layer foam.
  • One 6 in (15 cm) side panel makes a 42 in (107 cm) width; two make 48 in (122 cm).
  • An 8 in (20 cm) extender takes 80 in to 88 in (203 to 224 cm).
  • Relief cuts let it bend with the bed.
  • Removable foot and side bolsters add edge support.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • A bariatric patient on a bariatric-rated bed, especially the Joerns Bari10A.
  • Joerns recommends it for prevention and treatment of up to stage 2 pressure injuries.
  • The person's nurse, doctor or therapist decides which surface suits their skin and risk.
  • Choose a powered surface for air therapy or a higher stage.

Will it fit?

  • Six configurations: 36, 42 or 48 in wide and 80 or 88 in long. All are 6.5 in (16.5 cm) thick.
  • It is designed for the Bari10A frame. A standard bed frame is not rated for bariatric use.
  • The lower of the mattress capacity, 1000 lb (454 kg), and the bed's safe working load applies.
  • Health Canada recommends rail gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) in zones 1 to 3 and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) in zone 4; a wider mattress changes them.
  • Measure the deck and rails first. A mattress that has touched skin cannot be returned; see our return policy.

Using it day to day

  • Zip the side panels on or off before the sheet goes on, and add the extender for an 88 in bed.
  • In transport mode it is 36 by 80 in, so it passes a doorway or elevator with the patient on it.
  • Wipe the covers and check the panels, straps and bolsters at each bed change.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • It works with the Joerns Bari10A and other bariatric-rated frames.
  • There are no air cells, no control unit and no battery, so a power cut changes nothing.
  • The 1000 lb rating is for the mattress alone; the bed's limit may be lower.

Which version should I choose?

  • All six builds use the same mattress; the panels and extender set the size.
  • We confirm the build under B1000-4884NZBA before you order.

How does it compare?

The Drive bariatric foam mattress 54 in is a fixed-width foam surface. The ShearCare 1500 is a multi-layer bariatric foam surface with a different pressure plan. The Med Aire Plus 42 in adds powered alternating pressure. More options are in bariatric mattresses.
