Description
The Joerns DermaFloat LAL is a powered true low air loss surface sold with its control unit, 10 in (25 cm) high and 80 in (203 cm) long, in 36 or 42 in widths, rated 500 lbs (227 kg).
What does it do and how does it work?
- Twenty horizontal air cells, 8 in deep and arranged in three zones, sit over a 2 in safety cell.
- True low air loss wicks moisture away from the skin; Therapy mode holds a steady low air loss.
- Pulsate shifts the pressure every 30 seconds, and Autofirm fills the surface for a transfer and returns after about 12 minutes.
- Eight comfort settings let the caregiver tune the surface.
- CairRails are 2 in side air bolsters, and the therapy pad is low shear, low friction, fluid proof and vapour permeable.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Joerns lists stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries, moisture management and other clinical uses; the care team decides.
- A person up to 500 lbs (227 kg) on a 36 or 42 in deck.
- Someone who already owns part of the system can order the mattress or the control unit alone.
Will it fit?
- 36 x 80 x 10 in (89 x 203 x 25 cm) or 42 x 80 x 10 in (106 x 203 x 25 cm).
- The 500 lbs (227 kg) limit is the mattress rating; the bed frame's own safe working load applies if it is lower.
- Ten straps attach the mattress to the moving frame, and the hose connects at the foot.
- At 10 in high, recheck the gaps to the rails. Health Canada recommends gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends. See bed rails.
- A mattress that has touched skin cannot be returned, so measure first. See the return policy.
Using it day to day
- Hang the control unit on the footboard, not on the floor.
- There is no battery: after a power cut the pump restarts in Standby, and the 2 in safety cell stays inflated for up to 12 hours.
- For CPR, disconnect the hose marked CPR.
- Wipe the top pad, or launder it at 120 F (49 C) or cooler; no bleach and no steam.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- It needs a grounded 120 V outlet and the matching control unit.
- Warranty is two years on the mattress, one year on the cover and one year on electromechanical parts; see the Warranty tab.
How does it compare?
- DermaFloat LAL mattress: the mattress alone for a system you already have.
- DermaFloat LAL control unit: the pump alone.
- Low air loss mattresses: the category.
Frequently asked questions
Does this system alternate left and right?
No. It is true low air loss; Pulsate changes the pressure every 30 seconds but does not alternate two zones.
What happens in a power cut?
There is no battery. The pump restarts in Standby and the 2 in safety cell holds air for up to 12 hours.
Which width matches a usual home-care bed?
Most home decks are about 36 x 80 in; the 42 in mattress needs a wider frame.
