Description
The Joerns DermaFloat LAL mattress is the replacement surface for the LAL low air loss system. It is 10 in high, comes in 36 or 42 in widths, and is rated 500 lbs (227 kg). The control unit is separate.
Who is it for?
- An LAL control unit that still works, with a worn or torn mattress.
- Joerns lists stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries, moisture management, rehabilitation, burns, neurology and amputations; the care team decides.
- It is a full replacement, not an overlay, so the old mattress comes off.
- With no pump yet, order the complete system or the control unit.
How the surface is built
- Twenty horizontal 8 in cells sit in three zones, with a softer heel section.
- The cells are polyurethane-coated nylon over a 1680 denier nylon base with bed loops.
- A 2 in lower safety mattress stays inflated for up to 12 hours without power and supports transport.
- CairRails are 2 in side air bolsters with a valve on the hose and a lower ingress area.
- Three modes are available: Autofirm, Therapy and Pulsate, with eight comfort settings.
- A CPR valve deflates the surface quickly.
Will it fit the bed?
- 36 x 80 x 10 in (89 x 203 x 25 cm), code DFLAL-3680-M.
- 42 x 80 x 10 in (106 x 203 x 25 cm), code DFLAL-4280-M. The wider build needs a wider frame.
- Ten straps go to the moving part of the bed frame, plus six pad straps. The hose connects at the foot.
- 500 lbs (227 kg) is the mattress limit; the bed frame's own limit applies if it is lower.
- At 10 in it sits higher than a foam mattress; check the gaps beside the rails: Health Canada recommends under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends.
- A used mattress cannot be returned. Measure first and read the return policy.
Cover and care
- The two-way stretch nylon therapy pad is low friction, fluid proof, moisture vapour permeable and treated with a bacteriostat.
- Wipe it, or launder it at no more than 120 F (49 C) with a non-bleach detergent. Do not steam the mattress.

Frequently asked questions
Will my old DermaFloat LAL pump run this mattress?
Yes, if it is the LAL control unit, DFLAL-CU. An APL pump is a different system.
Is it an overlay?
No. It is a full 10 in replacement mattress; the old mattress comes off the deck.
Which width should I pick?
Match the deck. 36 in is the usual home-care width; 42 in needs a wider bed and frame.
What stays up during a power cut?
The 2 in safety mattress holds for up to 12 hours. The therapy cells need the pump, so the care team's outage plan still applies.

Warranty details
Joerns Healthcare warrants the DermaFloat LAL support surface (mattress and control unit) against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use. The warranty covers the original purchaser.
- Mattress: 2 years.
- Cover and electromechanical parts (compressors, valves, circuit boards, hoses and couplers): 1 year.
- Joerns supplies replacement parts, or services or replaces a defective product, at its option.
- Excludes burns, improper chemicals, needle punctures, cuts or abrasions, excessive loads, staining, improper maintenance or cleaning, use against the manual, and unauthorized modification or repair.
