Description
The Joerns Dolphin FIS replacement mattress is a powered fluid-immersion surface. Widths are 35, 42 or 48 in. It is not the crib, stretcher, or wheelchair pad.
What does it do and how does it work?
The surface simulates floating in fluid. The control unit reads weight, contact area, and position, then adjusts the cells. Joerns indicates it for prevention and healing of pressure injuries through stage 4, and for post-operative flaps and grafts.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
Choose it when the care plan calls for Dolphin FIS, including when a physician has said the person should not be turned. Over 500 lbs (227 kg), use the 48 in mattress, rated to 1,000 lbs (454.5 kg). A non-powered topper such as the Blake gel overlay is a different product.
Will it fit?
Stock length is 82 in (208 cm). Depth is 8 in (20 cm) or 10 in (25 cm). Widths are 35 in (89 cm), 42 in (107 cm) and 48 in (122 cm). The expandable model is 35 in wide and 8 in thick, from 80 to 92 in (203 to 234 cm).
An 88 in (224 cm) step-deck size is not one of these six codes. Take the old mattress off the bed, set the hose at the foot with the cells up, and strap it to the moving frame.
For an adult hospital bed, keep openings under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) inside the rail, under the rail, and between the rail and the mattress. See bed rails.
Using it day to day
Keep the control unit off the floor. For CPR, twist the red valve so the mattress deflates. The safety cell stays inflated. Close the valve before therapy starts again.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
These part numbers are the mattress. Tell us which Dolphin system is on the bed and we confirm before you order whether a control unit still has to be supplied.
The control unit battery carries therapy for about 12 hours off mains power. The bed's safe working load still applies. Stretcher, wheelchair, and crib pads are separate Dolphin products.
Which version should I choose?
At 500 lbs (227 kg): 35 x 82 x 8 in (DLPH-3582LPOOOJ-M), 35 x 82 x 10 in (DLPH-3582OOOOJ-M), 42 x 82 x 8 in (DLPH-4282LPOOJ-M), 42 x 82 x 10 in (DLPH-4282OOOOJ-M), and the expandable 35 in model (DLPH-3592EXOOJ-M). The 1,000 lb (454.5 kg) mattress is 48 x 82 x 10 in (DLPH-4882OOOOJ-M).
How does it compare?
The P.R.O. Matt Plus can start without a pump. Low air loss is another powered family. More surfaces are under medical mattresses.
Frequently asked questions
Is every size rated to 1,000 lbs?
No. Only the 48 x 82 x 10 in mattress is 1,000 lbs (454.5 kg). The 35 and 42 in models are 500 lbs (227 kg).
Does the CPR valve empty the safety cell?
No. Twisting the red valve deflates the therapy mattress. The safety cell stays inflated. Close the valve afterward.
Who decides if turning should stop?
The physician and the rest of the care team. Joerns allows that use only after the person has been cleared.

Warranty details
Joerns Healthcare warrants the Dolphin Fluid Immersion Simulation (FIS) system mattress against defects in workmanship and materials under normal and proper use. The warranty covers the original purchaser.
- Support surfaces: 2 years.
- Electromechanical parts (compressors, valves, circuit boards, hoses and couplers): 2 years.
- Joerns supplies replacement parts, or services or replaces a defective product, at its option.
- Excludes burns, improper chemicals, needle punctures, cuts or abrasions, excessive loads, staining, improper maintenance or cleaning, use against the manual, and unauthorized modification or repair.
