Description
The Joerns Dolphin FIS is a therapy mattress and AutoVector control unit, sold as a kit that adjusts to the person's weight, surface area and position.
What does it do and how does it work?
- AutoVector measures the person and sets an individual immersion profile; no weight is typed in.
- The surface supports the body over a large area, which Joerns describes as simulating immersion in fluid.
- Bed mode runs the mattress; Autofirm holds for about 15 minutes, then returns to the previous setting.
- Comfort adjusts one step at a time; do a hand check after a change so the person is not resting on the deck.
- The smooth nylon cover is low friction, low shear and vapour permeable.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- Joerns states the system is for prevention and healing of pressure injuries up to stage IV, and for post-operative flaps and grafts; the clinician decides.
- A person whose condition precludes turning and repositioning, one of Joerns' listed uses.
- Not the pediatric, wheelchair or stretcher Dolphin.
Will it fit?
- Six kits: 35, 42 or 48 in wide (89, 107 or 122 cm), 82 in long (208 cm), in 8 or 10 in (20 or 25 cm) heights.
- The 35 in expandable kit runs 80 to 92 in long (203 to 234 cm) with extension cells.
- Joerns rates the family 500 to 1000 lbs (227 to 454 kg) by configuration, and the mattress maximum is 1000 lbs; the bed's own safe working load also applies.
- Fit it with no gaps at the head, foot or rails. Health Canada recommends gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) within and under the rail, and under 60 mm (2 3/8 in) at the rail ends. See bed rails.
- A mattress that has touched skin cannot be returned; measure first. See the return policy.
Using it day to day
- Hang the control unit on the foot of the bed, not on the floor, and connect the hose.
- In a power cut the battery runs about 12 hours; low profile models add a foam safety cell after that.
- CPR is a valve on the therapy mattress.
- Unplug it, wipe it with a mild detergent or disinfectant, and clean the mattress with mild detergent and warm water or a tuberculocidal disinfectant; no harsh solvents.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- The kit is the mattress and the control unit; the bed, sheets and rails are separate.
- Warranty is two years on the surfaces and on compressors, valves, boards, hoses and couplers; see the Warranty tab.
- Match the kit code to the deck and the person's weight before ordering.
How does it compare?
- Joerns ProMatt Plus: a different Joerns support surface.
- DermaFloat APL system: alternating pressure and low air loss rather than fluid immersion.
- Medical mattresses: the full range.
Frequently asked questions
What comes in one kit?
The therapy mattress and its AutoVector control unit. The bed, sheets and rails are separate.
Is every width rated to 1000 lbs?
No. The family is rated 500 to 1000 lbs by configuration, and the bed's limit also applies.
What happens in a power cut?
About 12 hours on the battery; low profile models then add a foam safety cell.
