Description
The Motion Composites APEX C is a rigid T700 carbon-fibre manual wheelchair for an adult who self-propels.
What does it do and how does it work?
The carbon frame does not fold. Rear wheels come off on quick-release axles.
- Centre of gravity moves 0-6 in (0-15.2 cm). Camber is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 degrees.
- Back angle is 80-101 degrees. Back height is 9-21 in (22.9-53.3 cm). Armrests adjust 6-14 in (15.2-35.6 cm).
- One-piece footrest at 70, 75, 80, 85 or 90 degrees.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- An adult up to 265 lbs (120 kg).
- If the frame must fold for a car, choose a folding wheelchair. If a companion does all the pushing, choose a transport chair.
- Over 265 lbs (120 kg), see bariatric wheelchairs. If seating alone will not hold you upright, see a tilt-in-space wheelchair.
Will it fit?
- Seat width and depth: 12-20 in (30.5-50.8 cm), in 1 in steps. Measure hip width, hip to knee, and knee to heel.
- Front height is 14-21 in (35.6-53.3 cm): 14 in on a 3 in caster, from 16.5 in on a 6 in caster.
- Rear height is 14-20 in (35.6-50.8 cm): 14-17.5 in on a 20 in wheel, 16-20 in on a 26 in wheel.
- Overall width is 18 3/4 to 31 1/2 in (47.6-80 cm). We confirm width, depth and seat height before you order, or book a free home assessment.
Using it day to day
- Lift by the frame after the rear wheels are off. A 16 x 16 in chair is 9.7 lbs (4.4 kg), without the cushion, armrests or wheel locks.
- 17.2 lbs (7.8 kg) is that size with Newton Gravity wheels, Newton locks, an 80 degree footrest and a composition pallet, and without cushion, anti-tippers or armrests.
- Lock the wheels only when stopped. Clean with soap and water. Do not shower in the chair. Sit on a cushion, not the sling.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- One rider. Do not stand on the footrests or use the chair for weight training.
- Anti-tippers are optional. Use both until you know the balance point.
- Sitting in a moving vehicle needs the factory WC-19 tie-down. Without it, use a vehicle seat.
- Ramps over 10 ft (3 m): stay at or under 5.7 degrees (a 10 percent grade) unless a caregiver helps. Keep the frame above -20 C.
Which version should I choose?
- Aluminium APEX A: same 12-20 in seats, same 265 lbs (120 kg) limit, 10.6 lbs (4.8 kg) stripped, 18.0 lbs (8.2 kg) rolling.
- High-gloss carbon is standard, plus 19 other colours. Newton One spokes in 20, 22 or 24 in are standard.
How does it compare?
The Ki Mobility Ethos is rigid aluminium. The Rogue 2 is another rigid adult chair. The Helio A7 folds for a car.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move the rear axle myself?
A dealer sets centre of gravity, camber and seat height. Some screws only Motion Composites can turn.
Can someone else ride this chair?
It is built for one rider. Another person needs a specialist to reset the setup before riding.
How do the rear wheels come off?
Press the hub button and pull the wheel. Refit it only when the button pops fully out, then tug the wheel.
Carbon frame, back canes, side guards and footplates: lifetime for the first user. Components: 1 year. Tires, tubes, cushion, upholstery, arm pads and grips: 30 days. See the warranty tab.
