Orthex fixed side rails for the Sophia 2, Sophia 3 and Sophia 4 adjustable bases are a black steel pair, 16.5 by 20 inches (42 by 51 cm), part 721620.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Each rail is a rigid black steel frame that stays raised beside the mattress.
- There is no hinge, release or lock, so it does not drop, fold or slide away.
- The pair fits both sides and gives a handhold for turning; each rail covers part of the side, so the foot end stays open.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- It suits a Sophia base where a rail should stay in place on both sides.
- Choose the retractable pair when the rail must clear the side for transfers or bed making.
- Whether to use rails at all is for the care team to decide.
Will it fit?
- It fits the Sophia 2, Sophia 3 and Sophia 4 bases at their side-rail anchors.
- The rail is fixed to the base, so a thicker mattress leaves less rail above the sleeping surface.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- It is made for the Sophia base, not for Drive, Invacare or Joerns hospital bed frames.
- Health Canada advises checking that the mattress is the right size and type for the frame before rails are used; a poor fit can widen the gap at the rail (Health Canada hospital bed safety).
- Rails support getting in and out; they are not a restraint.
