Description

The Quantum Outback is a four-wheel all-terrain power base from Quantum Rehab, built for outdoor use with four independent motors and SRS suspension.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Four-wheel drive: four independent motors drive 15 in (38 cm) pneumatic wheels; the rear motors carry the brakes.
  • Suspension: SRS lets each wheel and caster travel independently over roots and gravel.
  • Speed and range: up to 8 km/h (5 mph), 9.65 km/h (6 mph) optional; 25.75 km (16 mi) at 300 lbs (136 kg) and 27.35 km (17 mi) at 220 lbs (100 kg).
  • Electronics: a 120A Q-Logic 3 controller runs the motors and power seating.
  • Lighting and colours: white front and red rear LEDs come standard; the shroud comes in seven camo or matte finishes.
  • Battery: two sealed 12V Group 27 deep-cycle batteries on an 8A off-board charger.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • It suits a rider who wants grass, gravel, woodland trails and uneven ground.
  • It suits a rehab build with TRU-Balance 3 power seating or Q-Captain, at 300 or 350 lbs (136 or 158.8 kg) by seat.
  • Choose a mid-wheel base for tight indoor routes; this one is 28.82 in (73.2 cm) wide with a 49.2 in (125 cm) turn.
  • Choose a folding chair if it must go in a car boot; this base does not fold and weighs 168.6 lbs (76.5 kg) without batteries.

Will it fit?

  • Rider: 300 lbs (136 kg) with TRU-Balance 3, 350 lbs (158.8 kg) with Q-Captain.
  • Seating: 16-22 in (41-56 cm) wide and deep; seat height 19-21.5 in (48-55 cm).
  • Base: 28.82 in (73.2 cm) wide and 42 in (106.7 cm) long without riggings; measure doorways and lifts against that width.
  • Ground: 4.92 in (12.5 cm) clearance, a 4 in (10.2 cm) obstacle, and a 49.2 in (125 cm) turning radius.

Using it day to day

  • Charge through the controller socket with the off-board 8A charger; use only the supplied or Quantum-approved charger.
  • Push with both freewheel levers down on the rear motors; pull them up for drive, on level ground with the power off.
  • Secure the empty chair at its three labelled tie-down points with four straps, facing forward; not by the freewheel levers.
  • Before each trip, check tyre pressure, brakes, battery charge and that both freewheel levers are up.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • The base takes TRU-Balance 3 power tilt or lift and tilt, or Q-Captain seating; the seating sets the capacity.
  • The backup camera (170 degree view, 3.5 in display) works only with Q-Logic 3.
  • IPX4 rated for splashes, not for driving through water.
  • Warranty: lifetime frame; 2 years electronics, motors, actuators and riggings; 6 months bearings; 12 months batteries.

How does it compare?

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with the seat raised?

Yes, with the optional 10 in (25.4 cm) elevation, at up to 3.2 mph (5.14 km/h).

Can I use an automotive battery charger?

No. Use the supplied off-board charger through the controller socket; an automotive charger is not approved.

How should I store it for the winter?

Charge fully, disconnect the battery harnesses and keep it dry; charge weekly if it stays in use.
