Description
The TARTA Custom Back is a modular custom wheelchair back from Stealth Products, built from four, five or six vertebrae with aluminium ribs and pads shaped to the trunk.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Vertebrae: each is 50 mm (1.97 in) tall, joined by pre-stressed steel elements into a spine-like column.
- Heights: four vertebrae give 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm); five give 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm); six give 12 to 14.5 in (30 to 37 cm).
- Ribs: malleable aluminium ribs in four sizes lock into the spine and bend by hand to follow the trunk for posterior and lateral support.
- Pads: shaped pads sit on the ribs with hook-and-loop for fitting, then fix with screws and T-nuts.
- Cover: the pre-configured back arrives with a Carter cover for the vertebrae and ribs.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- It suits a rider whose trunk does not fit a stock back and needs the shape built from their measurements.
- Choose a stocked foam backrest when a standard size fits.
- The Matrx PB back is a sized contoured back with a published capacity.
- An occupational therapist or physiotherapist takes the measurements in a seating assessment.
Will it fit?
The build starts with seven measurements: shoulder width, chest width, hip width, chest depth, seat to posterior iliac spine, seat to axilla and seat to top of shoulder.
- Trunk width: Small, Medium, Large and Extra-Large; the maker's bands overlap, so the measurements decide the size.
- Mounting: one mount is included, either single point adjustable height, 2-point removable, or a height adjustable removable mount with a bar.
- Rigidizer: a separate rigidizer is made in 10 to 13 in (25 to 33 cm), 12 to 16 in (30 to 41 cm) and 15 to 18 in (38 to 46 cm) widths.
Using it day to day
- Reshaping: the aluminium ribs can be contoured by hand after delivery as the trunk changes.
- Pads: the pads move on hook-and-loop before they are fixed, so the fit can be adjusted at a review.
- Build to order: it is made after the measurements and options are confirmed; the price is quoted to the build.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Mounting choice: the mount must match the back canes; the rigidizer is separate.
- Custom build: a made-to-order back is not returnable once production starts.
- Part changes: extra ribs and pads are separate parts and can be added later.

Frequently asked questions
Can the ribs be bent after delivery?
Yes. They are malleable aluminium and can be contoured by hand; the pads then adjust on hook-and-loop.
Is the mounting included?
Yes. One mount comes with every TARTA order, chosen from the three types when the back is ordered.

Yes. The maker lists extra ribs and pads as separate parts, and we can price them with the fitting.

Warranty details
Stealth Products warrants the TARTA Original custom back against failure due to defective materials or workmanship, and repairs or replaces a defective product at its discretion.
- Covers, headrest pads and cushions: 2 years.
- Hardware: 2 years.
- Covers replacement parts only; labour is not included.
- Excludes misuse, abuse, misapplication and changes made without Stealth Products' written approval. Any alteration, or a missing serial number where one applies, voids the warranty.
- Claims start with a return authorization from Stealth Products.
