Description
The Invacare Matrx PB Posture Back is a contoured wheelchair back with moulded polyurethane foam over an ABS shell, made by Motion Concepts for midline trunk support.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Shell and foam: a contoured ABS shell wrapped in moulded polyurethane foam, with an optional lumbar pad that fits behind the foam.
- Cover: moisture-resistant, breathable Meshtex polyester mesh.
- Models: MPB Standard and PBD Deep carry 300 lbs (136 kg); HDB and DHD heavy-duty carry 500 lbs (227 kg).
- Contour: 5 in (13 cm) on the MPB and HDB, 7 in (18 cm) on the PBD and DHD.
- Mounting: EasySet hardware is standard; Fixed, Extended Range and Split mounts are ordered for the chair.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- It suits a rider who needs midline trunk support from a contoured back.
- Choose the heavy-duty model above 300 lbs (136 kg).
- The Matrx Elite is a different back with a 3 in (7.6 cm) contour.
- An occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets it up in a seating assessment.
Will it fit?
Order the width and height, then mount it to the back canes.
- Sizes: 16, 18 or 20 in (41, 46 or 51 cm) wide by 14 to 20 in (36 to 51 cm) high, twelve combinations.
- Back canes: 3/4 to 1 in (19 to 25 mm); the hardware can sit 1 in (25 mm) narrower or wider than the back.
- Power seating: fixed mounting hardware is required.
- Tilt or recline: a rigidizer bar or crossbar must stabilise the back canes.
Using it day to day
- Installation: a qualified technician fits it with the original Matrx hardware and tightens every fastener.
- Cover care: remove the cover from the foam before washing; hand or machine wash, no bleach and no dry clean, then dry it completely.
- Shell and hardware: wipe with soap and water.
- Inspection: check the foam, cover and hardware monthly.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Weight: the limit belongs to the model, not the size; confirm the model on the order.
- Stability: moving or angling the back shifts the centre of gravity, so casters, wheels, angle, tilt, recline and seat depth may need resetting.
- Skin: check the skin often after a new back is fitted.
- Warranty: two years for the original purchaser; punctures, tears, burns, the removable cover, labour and shipping are excluded.
How does it compare?
- The Matrx Elite is a 3 in (7.6 cm) contour back with its own hardware.
- The Matrx E2 uses a Ripple Foam face and fits chairs 14 to 20 in wide.

Frequently asked questions
Must the lumbar insert be used?
No. It is an optional pad behind the foam, and the fitter decides whether it is needed.
Can I use another maker's mounting parts?
No. Use the original Matrx hardware; other parts have not been tested as the same assembly.
Does the back change wheelchair stability?
Yes. The fitter checks stability and the wheelchair settings after the back is moved or angled.
Can the cover be machine washed?
Yes, once it is removed from the foam; no bleach or dry clean, and dry it fully before refitting.
