Description
The Quickie 5R is a rigid ultralight manual wheelchair on an aluminium open frame, built to order by Sunrise Medical.
What does it do and how does it work?
The open frame has a swept-back, hydro-formed caster link, and the axle plate adjusts vertically as well as fore and aft.
- Centre of gravity moves 1.5 in (3.8 cm) forward to 4 in (10.2 cm) back, with 0, 3 or 6 degrees of camber.
- The standard build is 21.5 lb (9.8 kg), or 12.9 lb (5.9 kg) with the rear wheels and footrest off.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
It suits an active self-propelling rider who wants a rigid frame that adjusts with their technique.
- Choose a folding chair if the frame must collapse side to side.
- Choose a bariatric chair if the rider is over 265 lb (120 kg).
Will it fit?
- Seat width and depth each run 12 to 20 in (30.5 to 50.8 cm).
- Front seat height is 16 to 21 in (40.6 to 53.3 cm); rear seat height is 13 to 20 in (33.0 to 50.8 cm).
- Measure the seated hip width, and the back of the hips to the back of the knee.
Using it day to day
The back folds down and the rear wheels come off on quick-release axles.
- Fit a cushion: do not sit directly on the seat sling.
- Before a transfer, flip back or remove the armrests, swing or remove the footrests, and set the wheel locks.
- Pneumatic tyres take 65 psi (448 kPa) at 20, 22 and 26 in, 75 psi (517 kPa) at 24 in; Schwalbe Marathon tyres take 85 to 145 psi (586 to 1000 kPa).
- Keep the footrest and anti-tips 1.5 to 2 in (3.8 to 5.1 cm) off the ground.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
Order the transit system to ride in a vehicle as a seat; without it, transfer to a vehicle seat.
- Keep the chair straight on a slope: under 10 degrees up or down, under 6 degrees across.
- The frame carries 265 lb (120 kg), and options count toward it.
- Empulse M90 power assist, mountain wheels, knobby tyres and Frog Legs forks are options.
- JAY cushions and backs fit, and Quickie paints the back shell to match at no extra charge.
Which version should I choose?
Choose the frame type, axle plate and colour when you order.
- Frame types are Classic, Performance, XTR Suspension and Depth Adjustable Back.
- Twenty standard frame colours, four pattern colours and a seven colour anodized package are available.
How does it compare?
The QRi is another Quickie rigid chair at 22 lb (10 kg). The Nitrum has a transport weight under 11 lb (5 kg) and a 275 lb (125 kg) limit. See rigid wheelchairs.
