Description
The Quickie Nitrum is a rigid ultralight wheelchair in 7020 aluminium, hand built in California to the order form for an active adult who self-propels.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Two frames: the open frame and the Hybrid dual-tube frame, each also offered as an Active Rigid version with a fixed welded backrest and axle stems.
- Product weight: 18.3 lb (8.3 kg) open frame, 20.3 lb (9.2 kg) Hybrid, before options.
- Transport weight: 10.8 lb (4.9 kg) open frame, 12.8 lb (5.8 kg) Hybrid with the rear wheels off; 9.7 and 11.7 lb without the locks.
- 7020 ovalized, heat-treated aluminium frame with a patented single hollow-forged caster mechanism and adjustable caster spacing.
- The back folds with a one-handed release bar, with a Twist-Lock bar optional; the rear wheels are quick release.
- A direct-mount compact wheel lock saves 6 oz over the standard lock.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- An active rider who propels all day and lifts the chair into a car; the open frame carries 275 lb (125 kg) and the Hybrid 300 lb (136 kg).
- A chair that folds across the seat: a folding wheelchair. Over 300 lb: bariatric wheelchairs.
Will it fit?
- Seat width and depth each run 12 to 20 in (30.5 to 50.8 cm), giving 89 combinations.
- Front seat-to-floor height 16 to 21 in (40.6 to 53.3 cm); rear 13 to 20 in (33 to 50.8 cm).
- Back height 10 to 20 in adjustable or 8 to 19 in fixed; back angle -18 to +10 degrees.
- Frame angle 75, 80 or 85 degrees; inset 0, 1 or 2 in; camber 0, 3 or 6 degrees; centre of gravity 0 to 4 degrees.
- Measure hip width, hips to knee, and knee to heel in shoes.
Using it day to day
- Pull the release bar up to unlock and fold the back; the rear wheels release without tools.
- Set the caster position narrower or wider for the rider's balance.
- Use the wheel lock only to hold a parked chair.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- The rider and anything carried must stay within 275 lb (125 kg) on the open frame or 300 lb (136 kg) on the Hybrid.
- The transit option conforms to ANSI/RESNA WC-19 and ISO 7176, and is not available with Active Rigid.
- The base weights are before options; a configured chair weighs more.
Which version should I choose?
- Frame: open, Hybrid or Active Rigid.
- 24 colours, including four patterned finishes.
- Rear wheels 20 to 26 in; casters 4 to 6 in or Frog Legs suspension.
How does it compare?
- Ki Ethos: another rigid chair.
- Rogue-2: a rigid chair with a different frame.
- Rigid wheelchairs: the full range.
