Description

The Ride Designs Java Decaf back is a rigid wheelchair back for a growing child, with an aluminium shell and a foam insert fitted to the child's pelvis and trunk.

What does it do and how does it work?

It supports the pelvis and trunk while the child sits.

  • Shell and foam: aluminium shell with 0.5 in (1.3 cm) polyurethane foam over 0.25 in (0.6 cm) closed-cell foam.
  • Positioning: height, angle, depth, rotation and asymmetry adjust separately; recline is infinite and seat depth moves up to 8.5 in (22 cm).
  • Stays and mount: two Flexa-just strips bend by hand behind the foam; the Pediatric FlexLoc 2 quick-release mount is standard.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

It suits a child who needs pelvic and trunk support that grows with them.

  • Choose it when the chair is 10 to 15 in (25 to 38 cm) wide.
  • Choose the Java Back for an adult or larger teen: 14 to 20 in wide, 300 lb (136 kg).

A seating assessment with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the size and contour.

Will it fit?

Start with the chair's seat width; the back fits chairs from 10 to 15 in (25 to 38 cm).

  • Widths: 10, 12, 13 or 14 in (25, 30, 33 or 36 cm).
  • Heights: Regular 10 in (25 cm) on the 10 in back and 12 in (30 cm) on the others; Tall 13 in (33 cm) or 15 in (38 cm).
  • Part numbers: JB-1010D, JB-1013DT, JB-1212D, JB-1215DT, JB-1312D, JB-1315DT, JB-1412D and JB-1415DT.
  • Canes: the clamp fits round back canes only.

Using it day to day

The back arrives assembled; the first fitting uses the Allen wrenches in the box.

  • Removing it: release the pin levers and lift the back off; the chair does not fold with it fitted.
  • Washing: the cover machine washes at 60 C (140 F) with no bleach and hangs to dry; wipe the shell, never with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Checking it: retighten the fasteners every six months; maximum intended use is four years.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

Ride Designs recommends a Ride cushion under the child.

  • User weight: 200 lb (91 kg) at most.
  • Stability: a back changes the centre of gravity, so assess anti-tippers before use.
  • Vehicle use: crash tested to RESNA WC-4:2012 Section 20 and ISO 16840-4 with FlexLoc 2, but the wheelchair must also be tested.

How does it compare?

Frequently asked questions

Can the back move to the child's next wheelchair?

It fits another chair from 10 to 15 in wide, but the clamps may need changing.

Does the wheelchair fold with the back fitted?

No. Remove the back first; Pediatric FlexLoc 2 hardware does not fold with the chair.

What happens when the child outgrows this size?

The shell and insert can be replaced for growth, and a Growth Kit is available. A wider or taller back is needed when the frame no longer fits.
