Description
The Permobil Sömn, code SOMN4880, is a 48 x 80 x 6 in (122 x 203 x 15 cm) foam mattress with a Startex cover.
What does it do and how does it work?
Permobil calls the Sömn the firmer of its two Signature foam mattresses. It is not a powered surface.
- A 4 in (10 cm) foam base sits under a 2 in (5 cm) top. Serene foam is at the heel. Permobil states the build uses pressure-reducing materials.
- Transfer edges are 3 in (8 cm) on both sides. The person's nurse, doctor or therapist decides if this surface is right.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
It is for a wide deck when the Sömn foam build is the one the care team wants.
- Choose a narrower Sömn code if the deck is under 48 in (122 cm). Choose a blower mattress if the person needs moving air.
- We confirm the weight rating for SOMN4880 before you order. Use the lower of that rating and the bed's safe working load.
Will it fit?
The mattress is 48 in wide, 80 in long and 6 in high.
- Measure the deck on the bariatric bed. A 36 in hospital deck is too narrow. It is a full mattress, not a topper.
- At 6 in it can sit differently from a thicker mattress. Health Canada wants rail gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) and end gaps under 60 mm (2 3/8 in). Foam can compress. Test the bed rails.
Using it day to day
Set it on the deck. There is no pump and no hose.
- The cover supplied with the mattress is a fluid-resistant Startex full enclosure. The mattress has a 2 year limited warranty; see the Warranty tab.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
SOMN4880 is the mattress with that cover. It does not include a bed or rails.
- A used mattress, or one that has touched skin, cannot come back under the return policy.

Frequently asked questions
Is SOMN4880 only a cover?
No. SOMN4880 is the mattress supplied with its Startex cover. The cover alone is part COV-REPL4880-STX.
Do the transfer edges replace bed rails?
No. Permobil states the 3 in edges help reduce the risk of falls. They are foam, not bed rails.
Is the firm border unique to the Sömn?
No. Permobil's 2.5 lb density, IFD 65 border note also covers the Koppla and the Symmetry.
