Description
The Silverback Max Extra Deep Contour Backrest from Blake Medical is a wheelchair back with a 6 in (152 mm) contour and a gel insert along the spine.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Extra Deep contour: 6 in of curve, the deepest of Blake's three contours; Active is 2.5 in and Deep is 4 in.
- Layers: an aluminium shell, 1.25 in (32 mm) of foam, a 3.75 in (95 mm) gel insert along the spine, the Max extra gel layer and a pillow top face.
- Cover: a breathable four-way stretch cover; a wipeable cover is available at extra cost.
- Use: postural support and skin protection in power wheelchairs, including where tilt and recline change the load along the spine.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- More support: for a user who needs more postural support than the Active or Deep contour gives.
- Curved spine and bony points: Blake describes the Max gel package as the build for over-curvature of the spine and bony prominences.
- Assessment first: an occupational therapist or physiotherapist sets the contour and the hardware.
- Milder needs: the Active contour is the shallower build.
Will it fit?
- Widths: 16, 18 or 20 in stocked; 14 and 22 in built to order.
- Heights: 16 in (Standard), 18 in (Tall) or 20 in (Extra Tall); other heights to order.
- Nine combinations: 16x16, 16x18, 16x20, 18x16, 18x18, 18x20, 20x16, 20x18 and 20x20 in.
- Chair fit: the back matches the chair width; a 16 in back fits an 18 in chair with the 1.5 in pins.
- Weight rating: confirmed for the specified back and hardware before the order.
Using it day to day
- What arrives: the bracket and pins are fitted to the shell; the mounting kit ships separately with stud plates, brackets, clamps, nuts and 0.5, 1 and 1.5 in pins.
- Mounting: the rubber grip wraps the back cane, the clamp tightens over it, the bottom pins drop into the slots and the top pins into the locks.
- Adjustment: 45 degrees of angle and 2 in (51 mm) of depth on the screws.
- Warranty: 2 years on the backrest, shell and hardware; 1 year on the cover.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- Deepest contour: 6 in; if the assessment calls for less, the Deep or Active build is the choice.
- Custom builds: made to order and non-returnable; read the return policy.
- Hardware: the mounting kit is separate from the shell.
Which version should I choose?
- Size: width and height from the nine combinations.
- Contour: Extra Deep here; Active and Deep are separate builds.
- Cover: four-way stretch standard, wipeable optional.
How does it compare?
The published Silverback Max page carries the other contours, the Prism Ultra is a fixed-shape foam back, and the Matrx E2 is a 3 in contour shell. See all wheelchair backrests.
