The Drive ATC22-R is an aluminum bariatric transport chair with a 22 in seat, built for a larger adult who rides while a companion pushes.
What does it do and how does it work?
- Aluminum frame rated for 450 lb (204 kg), at 33 lb (15 kg).
- 12 in (30.5 cm) flat-free rear wheels and a padded push bar; no hand rims, so the rider cannot self-propel.
- Wheel locks on both rear wheels, with levers on the push handles for the companion.
- Padded armrests built into the frame; they do not flip back or come off.
- Heavy-duty nylon reinforced upholstery, a seat belt and anti-tippers included.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
- A larger adult, up to 450 lb (204 kg), who needs a companion to push.
- For a side transfer that needs the arms out of the way, choose the steel BTR22-R with removable arms.
- For self-propelling, choose the Sentra; for tilt, see tilt-in-space wheelchairs.
Will it fit?
- Seat 22 in wide by 18 in deep (56 by 46 cm), 21 in (53 cm) from the floor; back 16 in (41 cm). Width is across the upholstery, not between the arms.
- Open 30 in (76 cm) wide and 41 in (104 cm) long with footrests; folded 12 in (30.5 cm) wide and 37.5 in (95 cm) tall.
- Measure hip width, hip to knee, and knee to heel in usual shoes.
Using it day to day
- To open, tilt the chair and push down on the seat rails; lift the back upright and its lock engages.
- To fold the back, pull up both locks together. Footrests swing outward and lift off, and their length adjusts on the telescoping tube.
- Keep the footrests at least 2.5 in (6.4 cm) off the floor. Lock both rear wheels and turn the casters forward before a transfer.
- Dry it if wet, wax the metal monthly and clean the upholstery with mild soap; check the wheels monthly.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
- A companion must operate it; a rider alone cannot push or brake it.
- Do not use it as a seat in a car or van.
- Do not lean out or step on the footplates; ask a qualified professional about ramps.
- No elevating legrests. A 22 by 18 in cushion fits the seat and is not included.
How does it compare?
- BTR22-R: the same 450 lb rating in steel, with removable arms and a lower seat.
- Sentra: self-propelled, rated to 500 lb (227 kg).
- Lightweight Expedition: for riders under 300 lb (136 kg).
Frequently asked questions
Does the back recline?
No. It stays upright in use and folds down for storage, and both locks release the back.
Can I order it in blue?
No. This chair is red with black upholstery only; the blue and 20 in versions are the steel BTR series.
Will the folded chair fit in a car?
Folded, it is 12 in (30.5 cm) wide; open, it is 37.5 in (95 cm) tall. Check the boot against those figures.

Drive Medical warrants the 22 inch Bariatric Aluminum Transport Chair (ATC22-R) to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the original consumer purchaser.
- Frame and durable parts: limited lifetime, original purchaser only.
- Not covered: non-durable parts that wear and need periodic replacement, such as rubber accessories, casters and grips.
- Excludes failure from misuse, negligence or normal wear and tear.
