Invacare Matrx MAC Backrest - Hug Stamina Fiber

The Invacare Matrx MAC Backrest in the HUG StaminaFibre build is a rigid wheelchair back from Motion Concepts, an Invacare company. Its centre panel carries a conformable StaminaFibre insert, and two fixed lateral contour extensions bolt on either side, so the back is built to the width, length and contour the seating team specifies. Motion Concepts gives the HUG model as its recommendation for accommodating mild postural asymmetries, with a SHAPE insert available for moderate ones. It holds up to 300 lbs (136 kg), clamps to back canes from 3/4 to 1 inch, and is sold here by written seating quote.

  • Back lengths: 14" to 22" (356 to 559 mm); the 14" length is built only 14" and 15" wide

What is included?

The back as one order: the centre panel with its conformable HUG StaminaFibre insert, two fixed lateral contour extensions in the depths you pick, the Meshtex cover set, EasySet mounting hardware, the heavy-duty headrest interface and the installation tool, with the user manual. A SHAPE insert that layers under the HUG insert, wipeable Startex covers, extra laterals and a spare cover are added on the same order. Choose the back width, the back length and the contour depth in a seating quote request, because the maker builds each back to those three answers.

Description

Motion Concepts, an Invacare company, builds the Matrx MAC back in Ontario for a wheelchair that needs a back shaped to the person instead of picked off a shelf.

Browse wheelchair backrests.

Who is it for?

  • The MAC back is for someone whose wheelchair back has to be built to a shape rather than adjusted out of a box.
  • If the chair only needs a light back with a little side support, a simpler fixed-shape back costs less and arrives faster.
  • Choose the right back in a seating assessment with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.

Will it fit?

  • Sizes: back width is ordered in 1 in steps from 14 to 20 in, and back length is 14, 16, 18, 20 or 22 in; the 14 in length is built only in 14 and 15 in widths.
  • Part numbers: MAC plus width and length plus HUG, so MAC1618-HUG is 16 in wide by 18 in long.
  • Chair width: a 14 in back suits chairs 13 to 16 in wide, and a 20 in back suits chairs 19 to 22 in wide.

How does it work?

  • The back is a centre panel with a conformable HUG StaminaFibre insert, plus two fixed lateral contour extensions bolted on either side.
  • The laterals come in 3.5, 6 or 9 in depth and 8 or 10 in length, and an asymmetrical contour is available. Width grows 1/2 in on each side, for 1 in in total, and lateral height is set with the person seated.
  • EasySet hardware is standard and fits 3/4, 7/8 or 1 in back canes. It adjusts angle through 40 degrees, depth 2 in (51 mm) in front of or behind the canes, and rotation. A heavy-duty headrest interface and the installation tool are included.

What are the care limits?

  • Meshtex fabric is the standard cover on the centre panel and laterals; the infection control build swaps the panel that sits against the person for wipeable Startex, a PU coated fabric, and keeps Meshtex on the rear.
  • Remove the HUG insert before washing. Wash it by hand or machine in warm water up to 60°C (140°F) on a delicate cycle with neutral detergent, without fabric softener; do not wring it, then drip dry or tumble dry low and do not iron it.
  • The warranty is two years for the original purchaser; the removable cover is excluded.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MAC back arrive with the mounting hardware?

Yes. EasySet hardware is standard and is ordered in the same part number as the back, in either a fixed or a swing-away version.

What is the SHAPE insert for?

The SHAPE insert is a layer of configurable foam pieces that goes underneath the HUG insert on a HUG back.

How wide a wheelchair does the MAC back fit?

A 20-inch back is quoted for wheelchairs 19 to 22 inches wide, and each smaller width has its own chair range.
