The Joerns Cair 1000 (CRLAL-4880-M) is a 48 in (122 cm) true low air loss mattress for one person up to 1000 lbs (454 kg).
What does it do and how does it work?
Air moves through 20 cells, 6.5 in (16.5 cm) deep, in head, torso and foot zones.
- Therapy has eight firmness levels. Pulsate adds a pulse. Autofirm fills the surface for a transfer or bedside care.
- A Fowler sensor adds support when the head reaches about 30 degrees. The cells sit over a 2 in (5 cm) safety cell.
- CairRails are side bolsters. Joerns states they reduce fall risk. They are not bed rails. CPR is a quick disconnect at the control unit.
Who is it for, and who should choose something else?
Joerns states it is for stage 1 to 4 pressure injuries when moisture management is required, and lists burns, neurology, dermatology and amputations. The person's nurse, doctor or therapist decides.
- Skip it if the person does not need blown air, or if the deck is under 48 in (122 cm).
- Use the lower of 1000 lbs (454 kg) and the bed's safe working load.
Will it fit?
Size is 48 x 80 x 8.5 in (122 x 203 x 22 cm). The mattress weighs 22 lbs (10 kg).
- It needs a 48 in deck. See bariatric beds.
- Health Canada wants rail gaps under 120 mm (4 3/4 in) and end gaps under 60 mm (2 3/8 in). Air can compress. Test the bed rails.
- We confirm the control unit is on the order. CRLAL-4880-M is the mattress.
Using it day to day
Connect the hose and plug in the control unit before use.
- Autofirm for a transfer, then one of eight levels or Pulsate. The pad is fluid proof, vapour permeable, low friction and low shear, with an infection-control treatment.
- If power fails, the 2 in safety cell stays up for up to 12 hours. Low air loss and pulsation stop.
What does it work with, and what are its limits?
It replaces the mattress. It is not a topper.
- The control unit is 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg) and 13.5 x 11 x 7.5 in (34 x 28 x 19 cm).
- A used mattress, or one that has touched skin, cannot come back under the return policy.

Frequently asked questions
Does the panel lock itself?
Joerns uses an automatic panel lockout. A caregiver does not set a lock after each change.
Will shifting in bed change the firmness?
Joerns states closed loop control holds the interface pressure when the person moves or the room temperature changes.
Is it only for pressure injuries?
No. Joerns also lists pain management for AIDS, arthritis and oncology. The person's nurse, doctor or therapist still decides.
Must it sit on a Bari 10A bed?
No. Joerns names the Bari 10A as one frame these surfaces pair with. The bed must still carry the person's weight.
