Description

The Joerns DermaFloat APL control unit, code DFAPL-CU, is the pump for a DermaFloat APL alternating pressure and low air loss mattress. It is sold without the mattress.

What does it do and how does it work?

  • Three modes: Autofirm inflates the surface for transfers, Therapy holds a static surface, and Alternating shifts pressure between adjacent air cells.
  • Cycle times are 5, 10 or 15 minutes, with eight comfort settings.
  • The system delivers up to 40 litres of airflow per minute and low air loss under the mattress cover.
  • Autofirm returns to the previous mode after about 12 minutes.
  • A panel lockout prevents unintended changes.

Who is it for, and who should choose something else?

  • A caregiver replacing a failed pump on an existing DermaFloat APL mattress.
  • A person whose care team recommends alternating pressure and low air loss; the clinician decides.
  • Someone who needs the mattress as well should choose the DermaFloat APL mattress or the complete system.

Will it fit?

  • The pump is 7.5 in wide, 12.25 in high and 5.5 in deep (19 x 31 x 14 cm), and weighs 10 lb (4.5 kg).
  • It hangs on the foot of the bed and connects to the DermaFloat APL mattress hose set.
  • Plug it into a grounded 120 V outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch.
  • CPR is a quick disconnect at the pump; practise it with the care team. See bed rails for the mattress and rail gaps.

Using it day to day

  • Hang the pump, connect the hose, then set the mode and comfort level.
  • In a power failure a red light flashes and a beep sounds every 2 seconds for up to 20 minutes. An outage of 20 minutes or less restores the previous settings; after a longer one, reset the mode.
  • The therapy cells stay inflated for up to 12 hours if the pump stays connected to the mattress.
  • Check the rear air filter; hand-wash it in warm soapy water and let it dry.
  • Unplug the pump before cleaning, and wipe the case with a mild detergent without flooding it.

What does it work with, and what are its limits?

  • It is the pump only: no mattress, bed or sheets are included.
  • Use the DermaFloat APL pump with the DermaFloat APL mattress; do not swap it with another Joerns pump.
  • Electromechanical parts carry a one year warranty; the mattress carries two years. See the Warranty tab.
  • Do not steam clean the pump or immerse it in water.

How does it compare?

Frequently asked questions

Does DFAPL-CU include the mattress?

No. This code is the pump; the DermaFloat APL mattress is a separate order.

What happens in a power cut?

An alarm runs for up to 20 minutes, the cells stay up about 12 hours if connected, and a long outage needs the mode reset.

Is this the same pump as the Dolphin?

No. Use the pump made for the DermaFloat APL mattress.
