Frequently asked questions

How much does a stairlift cost in Ontario?

Straight stairlifts usually cost less than curved ones, and the price depends on the length and shape of your staircase and the features you choose. We give you an exact written price after a free measure of your stairs. Funding depends on the device and your situation. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first. March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program may help eligible people, and financing is available.

Does ADP cover stairlifts?

March of Dimes' Home and Vehicle Modification Program may help eligible people pay for a stairlift (it is means tested), and some people have coverage through WSIB, Veterans Affairs or private insurance. We prepare the quote and product details those programs ask for.

How long does stairlift installation take?

Straight stairlift installation typically takes 2-4 hours. The stairlift attaches to the stairs, not the wall, so no structural modifications are needed. Curved stairlifts require 4-6 weeks for custom manufacturing to match your exact staircase shape, then about half a day for installation.

Can a stairlift be installed on narrow stairs?

Yes, stairlifts can be installed on stairs as narrow as 28 inches. The seat folds up when not in use, leaving plenty of room for others to walk. We offer compact models specifically designed for narrow staircases.

Do stairlifts work during a power outage?

Yes, all our stairlifts have battery backup that automatically charges while plugged in. During a power outage, the stairlift will continue to operate for multiple trips up and down the stairs until power is restored.

What is the weight capacity of a stairlift?

Standard stairlifts have a weight capacity of 300-350 lbs. We also offer heavy-duty bariatric stairlifts with capacities up to 600 lbs. Contact us to discuss your specific needs and we will recommend the right model.

Can I get a used or refurbished stairlift?

Yes, we offer certified refurbished stairlifts at significant savings. All refurbished units are thoroughly inspected, serviced, and come with a warranty. This is a great option for straight staircases to reduce costs.

Do you service and repair stairlifts?

Yes, we provide full service and repair for all stairlift brands including Handicare, Stannah, Bruno, and Acorn. Our technicians offer both scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs throughout Toronto and the GTA.

Is there an income limit for ADP?

No. ADP has no income test: Ontario residents with a valid health card and a qualifying long-term physical disability may be eligible. Mobility Specialties is an ADP registered vendor: we check what ADP and other programs may cover and show your share first.

How often can I get new equipment through ADP?

ADP sets a usage period for each device type; for example, a wheelchair is usually replaced no sooner than every five years. After the usage period you may qualify for a replacement if you still need the device, and sooner if your needs change significantly.

Can I upgrade my ADP equipment?

Yes. You can choose features beyond what ADP approves and pay the difference. You pay your share plus the cost of any upgrades, and we show you both before anything is ordered.

What documents do I need for ADP application?

You need a valid Ontario health card and an assessment by an ADP authorizer (usually an occupational or physical therapist). The application has sections for you, for the authorizer and for us as the ADP registered vendor; your authorizer will tell you if a physician also needs to sign. We guide you through gathering everything.
